My wife pulled a 2nd shooter gig today. She had to leave by 12:30p and I got back to the house from errands at about noon to find her fixing her hair, doing makeup, etc. etc. Went into the other room and find she hasn't packed the first piece of gear. She was already nervous as could be so I didn't scold her. Just packed everything up, double-checked it, then it took everything I could do just to get her out the door, and only 5 minutes late. She was intending to use 2 Alien Bees strobes with radio transmitters and probably a speedlite on the camera. Taking the family posed shots after the ceremony. About 2p I get a panic call, "I can't get the lights to fire. What should I do?" It took everything I could muster to not spout off "You should've been checking your gear instead of fixing your hair and trying on clothes." Instead, I told her, "change the batteries in the radio units, check the channels are in sync and if it still doesn't work, put a speedlite on the camera and let the Alien Bees fire optically." I'm going over songs for my gig this evening and have to leave in a couple of hours. She should be coming home about the time I'm headed to my gig. It'll be interesting to hear what ended up happening.

Now the real question, do you actually SAY something to your wife or just let her figure it out? ;)

The real question is why are you criticizing your wife on this Forum? Thats pitiful. No wonder nobody replied! Have you run out of Vendors to criticize for your weekly Vendor Critique Column?

There is a reason I don't work with my wife in my DJ business :) She becomes an employee and I am hard to please when it comes to my DJ business. You either need to let her learn on her own and improve, or wait for her to come to you for help, and give that help with cautious hands.

If she doesn't take criticism well, then you need to tread lightly on her working for you, a happy marriage can not be measured in dollars :)

Good luck.

Her gig turned out great. She'd gotten flustered and didn't realize she hadn't turned her transmitter 'on' on the camera. She was 1 of 4 photogs and said they had a great time and she couldn't believe you could make that much for so little work. Sunday, she already got word from the boss that she'd gotten a couple of shots that the boss lady missed when her camera froze. The lead also worked with her on shooting in manual, something she's been terrified of doing. Her confidence is definitely building. Glad I didn't say anything negative.
