After a year of learning what not to do the hard way on my own I've decided that perhaps it would be best to learn the ropes from someone more seasoned in the business. So... is there by anyone here in or anyone here who knows someone in Lexington KY that might be willing to mentor me in exchange for grunt work services?

If you want to drive out here for a big weekend i'll put you up in a hotel we have trade at and you could go to 15 jobs in a weekend my next big weekends are this weekend (probably too short notice) and September 6th its my understanding you could make it here in 5 hours
There is a days inn and holiday inn express at the foot of our warehouse driveway
We are based in Winston Salem, NC

Nice post and I do hope someone can help you but if nobody does you really can learn a lot off these Chat Boards if you are willing to leave your ego at the door and follow the guidance given you.

The best way off the top of my head would be to list 7 things you would like to learn. Week 1 Post a thread concerning your first item and see where it goes for 7 days then post your second item you would like to learn

Good Luck to you and I look forward to your threads as long as they are good ones. LOL

I appreciate the offer, it sounds like an excellent opportunity, it may be difficult for me to swing though. This weekend I'm moving back to Lexington for school and I've already bought tickets for a concert on the 6th. If a weekend comes up that works out I wouldn't mind making the drive.

Thanks for the advice Cesar. I dropped the ego when I learned first hand that GemSound is not quite the top notch in equipment. Thankfully my playlists got me through and landed me more gigs (or it was that nobody else could be found). Anyway, it's time that I offer my clients more (in addition to better equipment) and I'll take learning anyway I can get it.

every weekend from the 6th of september until the 13th of december is slammed so let me know

zman - You may have to make a decision as to what is more important, social activities or business. Actually, strike that. You WILL have to make a decision as to what is more important...

If you decide to get into this business, you can pretty much kiss your free weekends goodbye. It's a tough choice, but those of us who've done it are probably pretty happy with our decisions...

Kyle is offering a fantastic opportunity that not many others would. You'd do well to take him up on it and absorb as much knowledge as you can!

Good luck and welcome to ODJT!

I would echo Zac's stand on this and add that social activities getting in the way of a DJ in training ends that training and employment instantly, the only thing that can get in the way is regular employment or your mother died. I don't even allow for being sick unless you are chitting yourself and if that is the case just bring a few extra sets of clothes.

A cork will also work :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Zman, this is where you need to set your priorities and decide what's in your future. Kyle's offer is an incredible way to start you in the business and learn from somebody that knows what he's doing.

Wow thanks guys.
I just figured by offering this he could see a whole bunch of different gigs, different style djs etc in one weekend.

Like i said PM me we're pretty much booked solid until the end of the year

I apologize if my response concerning the concert came across as unprofessional or disrespectful. Kyle, again I appreciate the offer to be straightforward I doubt that I can justify the drive. First priority is currently college.

While I don't wish to be the guy with lights, a PA, and plays music, I am. It isn't something I wish to remain but at the same time a non-profit venture, a.k.a. hobby, is all this will ever amount to. Ever since I started DJing school gigs were easy to get due to the lack of DJs in Paducah. This still remains the case as I've already been receiving phone calls from the schools that gave me my start as their first choice. I turned them down due to being four hours away this year for college. They've sinced called me back because they can't find anyone and will work around my school schedule.

I guess this has sorta turned into a WWYD:

Strive for being mediocre and fill a need because you're helping out those who helped you and because it's something you enjoy

or

Quit out of respect for the image of the industry because this isn't a personal top priority??

Questions, comments, complaints?

Improve your craft and become a superstar. You dont need a truck load full of FOH take what you do best, do it best and fill in the gaps

Isn't Barry Stamper in Kentucky? Mabye he can help out

Hey Z! I am into my 2nd year in the biz and have been working like a big dog on a bunch of gigs. I'm very encouraged. But before I started, I apprenticed w/ 5 other DJs in order to learn the biz. I did hard time loading, carrying, lifting, taping, etc., a lot of it unpaid. But I learned a few tricks and the bigger benefit was the networking. So I want to encourage you in your pursuit of knowledge. I also saw a lot of negative things from the more seasoned DJs but I learned from those things too. So best wishes to you, Z!
