I host my blog on Wordpress and love it.

I am not technical enough to even attempt to do actual web design with it.

Wordpress.com - To host your blog on their servers...
Wordpress.org - To download the Free software and run it on your own server(s)...

MOST hosts now have and installation of wordpress in their control panel, which makes it easy for you to host your own blog....

I would recommend that you host your blog on your own site...

I've been told if I want to do this, try it on Wordpress.com until I get the hang of it or see if I like it, then host it on my own site.

That's a good way to start. You can always export your posts from a Wordpress.com blog and import them into a blog you setup on your own site. Export and Import is short for tech speak for 'it will copy over easily'. :)

Plus it's an extra step.. which depending on how long you wait, may be painful...

I just decided to back up my MySQL Database for FHP... 81.6 Megabytes.... Damn... moving my server will be a week long headache!!!!!!!!!!

I do much larger DB moves regularly. It a minor headache, so long as you know what your doing importing the database from the command line things go pretty smoothly. Just the other day I exported and imported ODJT's entire database which is in the hundreds of MBs in less than 20 minutes to test the upgrade process to vBulletin 4.

I agree it can be a problem SEO wise for a couple months if Sarge decides to move to self hosted but it looks like for Sarge the 'training wheels' of wp.com may be well worth it. :)

I just installed wordpress on my site. It was NOT quick, easy, or painless. The instructions were missing one crucial step. Once customer support from 1and1 figured that out, it wasn't too bad. It should take another day or two to get everything figured out and then i'll give it a whirl.

Surprised 1&1 support actually helped you, they've always been useless to me. :D If you run into trouble with WP in the future just holler.

Thanks Dan. I have used 1and1 customer service twice now and both times they were very helpful. Did I mention that both times I got an english speaking agent?

I use 1and1 as well. Never had an issue with CS. I'm attempting to setup a wordpress blog with them and move away from Blogger. My only issue so far is trying to put in custom pictures. i don't really like what they have so far.

Yea I use 1and1 for my hosting of my blogs and have really gone above and beyond sometimes.. even helping me understand why my own scripts stop working..lol...

Be glad that you took that painful step Young.. you will see how important having a blog on your site is... now the even harder part... Blogging on a regular basis... for starters... I would say... Minimum... once a week if not more often...

Target stuff that will help out your potential customers... 1st... and then edit for the Search engines....

Here's an example of a post I did Yesterday...
Tips for Attending a Bridal Show or Extravaganza in Houston

Targeted to Help brides attend a bridal show in my opinion, then I edited the Title tags to match keywords I want to be found for, then I edited the Title to not only match the content but match the keywords I want to be found on.. can you figure out what those keywords are?

Can you give us an example for that, I'm sure between Dan and I we can help you get it going...

Then I need some advice.. lol.. I'm afraid of SSH...

Thanks Frank but my blog will not be related to DJing. I may start a blog about DJing later.

My link was just an example... that's why I made the comment about your potential customers.. which may just be readers... :)

Most people are, I was at first too. One command as root can wipe your entire computer or server including the operating system. We're all so used to point and click that entering commands and getting no feedback is scary to us.

One you learn the basics you will be much more confident. Here's the tutorial I used to learn importing and exporting databases quite a while ago: How to Backup Your MySql Database - vBulletin and Computer Help Forum . Greg the owner of that forum is a decent guy and helpful even if he's a little rough around the edges.

As far as I know 1and1 don't give SSH on their lower accounts and the access that they do give is terribly crippled. It's not that big of a deal for people who don't regularly use it.

I should note that 1&1 limits each database's size to 100MB. It will take you quite a while to fill it up with Wordpress but just something to think about for the future.

Here's what I made so far. I'm sure it can be changed in the html. I haven't had a chance to play with it yet.

I clicked over and it looks like Wordpress's style is broken. I'm guessing it's a bad edit. Take a look at http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ for free themes. They're all GPL'd which means your free to use and modify them. All are a good starting point you can keep the layout as is or add/change things to get the look you want.

Theme installation is straight forward here is a tutorial: http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes#Adding_New_Themes

I highly recommend any Wordpress newbies read over the First Steps with Wordpress. WP's documentation is top notch over there. :)
