I saw an ad online where a bride was looking to book a DJ for next year to do their wedding. The music they want is traditional Brazilian music, modern Latin music, Swing and Jazz. The opening sentence says this is not a club venue occasion. The thing that caught my attention is that the music isn't to be too loud. It said that if the people can't have a conversation with people at their table, it's too loud.

I get that for the dinner, cocktail hour. What about when it's time to get people up dancing? Will they still want the volume to remain the same? How many of you have done such a wedding? What if guest come up to you wanting the music to be louder? How would you handle this? I would explain to them this is what the bride and groom wants. That way I stay out of it and let them complain to the couple.

Until someone actually talks to the B/G, it's all a guess .. but I have done a number of events where people weren't dancing, they just wanted background music. Not every event has to have a dancing portion .. even a wedding.

Several of the events I've done are as you describe, Steve. However, it does seem a little strange for a wedding... not having the dance segment, but HEY! I'd give the client what she wants. If someone complains, it's not that difficult to explain.[emoji4]

I actually prefer doing that type of event... easier on my ears and I get to play a wider variety of music.

Unusual, maybe ... but the ad didn't say NO dancing, just at a lower volume level ..

I wouldn't do this one .. I don't know Brazilian music, not really up on swing. I do have a decent jazz collection, but don't really like newer Latin music (love older stuff).

Probably not your kind of event... Making a video of a bunch of people sitting around talking to quiet music playing in the background would be a little weird if posted on your Web site.
has nothing to do with that. in fact i had not even read that part in detail till you posted it lol. It's more about the fact that this is a bride posting an ad looking for desperate dj's needing work to fulfill her wishes. You shouldn't be the one researching brides holding weddings...if that was the case, every friend of mine getting engaged, would be getting a message from me saying book me! Actually they'd be more qualified as a client than this random bride he found on craigslist. In reality, qualified brides should be contacting you. Seems like a waste of time for what is probably a low end gig that will have more of a headache than necessary

I don't know about what they have in mind as far as how much they want to spend. I just know it's to be 4pm-10:30pm. For me if I did do it they would need to pay some good money.

Why would they need to pay "some good money" .. Do you think this is harder than you would normally prepare? It would seem to be a fairly easy gig, assuming you knew the music .. or you pass on it.

For that much time Steve the amount would have to be decent enough for me to consider doing the wedding. Don't forget the time in the beginning to set up. So we're easily talking 7 1/2 hours for this wedding.

seems like a normal nj wedding... 30min ceremony, 1 hour cocktail, 5hr reception. Nothing unusual?

I've seen ads on wedding sites where the bride was looking to have their reception last 2 hours. I don't know what you are going to be able to do in 2 hours.

Someone did mention the ad was from Craigslist. Normally as most know here someone looking for a DJ on Craigslist isn't a client looking to spend a lot of money. There are exceptions but they are far and few between.

Macho do u actually perform in real wedding venues in Nj, if so which ones? If u did consistently you'd know no hall offers services for less than 4 hours.

Where on earth are you finding these clients.

Some of them looking for 2 hours was from WeDj.com and I think one more. I wouldn't look to doing a reception that was only 2 hours long. Our starting price to do a wedding is $500. I find it highly unlikely someone would pay that much for 2 hours. Of course I could be wrong.

Idk... people pay that much for one hour of my time. I Still don't get why you're searching for brides on sites that without a doubt are looking for the lowest price possible with often unreal expectations. If they're too lazy to do research for the right dj, you're setting up yourself for a negative experience regardless of what they pay.

You still didnt answer which venues you've personally performed at.

Could you get this one done for $500? If so, you should make contact with them. I'm sure that if MixmasterMachoMan and company booked this gig, it would be "through the roof".

Sorry but I don't see it being through the roof because of the restrictions on volume. I'm not use to the volume being that low at a wedding when it's time to get people up dancing. Unless the venue has this restriction.
