the kind of dollars a Macbook Pro machine costs, on a Windows laptop like this one?

It's endorsed by Dr. Dre. While I think it's cool that the bundle they're showing includes a Native Instruments sound card, wouldn't it have been cooler if the laptop had dual soundcards onboard, eliminating the need for a USB add-on?

Also, if you look at the specs, what processor does this laptop have? I've never heard of this line, is it dual core?

They tell me about the video card, but how good is the audio onboard it?

Overall: is this laptop worth $2399?

LOL I was just going to post this....

But no, I will not be buying this pc, to answer your question... I'm still using my SINGLE Core P4 Processor on WINXP to run Serato Scratch Live, Traktor and Itunes.... Yes I use Itunes for Dinner Music lists because of it's crossfading feature... :)

No laptop is worth that if you ask me, when you consider that even a $1000 laptop will handle video just fine, and that is what taxes us the most.

That said, I almost bought a Macbook Pro for $1500 because I like the OS, the lowered risk of viruses, and the software that is APPLE specific.

Any PC laptop over $1000 is usually geared toward gamers.

This time, this one is allegedly being geared towards us. Is it actually a better machine for us, and will we embrace it and pay for it, if it is?

Yes, I received the email from Native Instruments, which is the makers of Traktor DJ Software, and according to them, they colloborated with HP and DR Dre for this... You even get a DJ Soundacrd, DJ/Studio Headphones with it, and the Traktor Software......

It actually sounds pretty powerful

Everything you need
With everything you need to spin digital, you'll rock the club like never before. The PCs in this series include:

Beats by Dr. Dre

* Beats by Dr. Dre Studio High-Definition headphones, which have extra-large speaker drivers and a high-power digital amplifier for unprecedented deep bass, smooth, undistorted highs, and crystal-clear vocals
* An ultra mobile audio interface boasting two stereo outputs plus an ultra-loud output level
* Traktor DJ software, with essential DJ features like two state-of-the-art playback decks

Meh...the Envy appears to be aimed towards the bedroom DJ, the wannabe producer, the more affluent college student with too much money and time on his hands. I don't think that the professional mobile DJ is the primary target.

I'm writing this off as Dre's version of the Air Jordan.

Steve, did you just really ask this?:sqlaugh:

You see so many posts on the various DJ forums... Most of us are so cheap that we squeak when we walk.

I looked at it and still don't see it being worth that much money when I can use any software I already own and enjoy using on my $1K Sony Vaio. I now own OTSAV as well as Rockit, and as you know, OTS does video, and people are doing just fine on 3 year old machines with it.

Hell, I have been known to overpay - I have the Bose. But I don't see any reason to spend that much on a laptop... Just my 2 cents. :)

I did really just ask this.

I understand your Bose analogy, but I believe comparing it to a Macbook Pro might be closer to apples to apples.

Oh man, I hope we're not going to debate THAT again.

That may not be a bad analogy.

Core i7 is a quad core processor. That and the Core i5 are the replacements for the dual core processor lines (although they are still selling lots of Core 2 stuff). They're still usually only found on gaming machines, but are finally starting to migrate...

Yeah I was about to say the i7 is all the rage these days. Looking over the specs I immediately noticed the CD drive is external. I know we're moving away from physical media but how is a DJ supposed to rip all his music?

The only thing I see that's different from a regular laptop is the sound card, more RAM than usual, and a faster default hard drive.

I wouldn't pay the premium for it but then again I'm a confirmed cheap bastid. :D

The i7 with 6GB of RAM running 64-bit Win7 with a 320GB 7,200 rpm drive is expected to be the new gaming and workstation replacement laptop. (Slightly different video chipsets between gaming and workstation/CAD, but they are the same basic machines.) The sweet spot for pricing has been hovering at $2,000 for these types of machines. Does a DJ/VJ need this much power, probably not, but if you are an all eggs in one basket type person using a single laptop to run remote music, main system music, videos and DMX control all at the same time, these machines will get-r-done!

i7 and i5 models will supersede the current Core2 laptops in Q1. Core2's are expected to linger in the market for home use and their pricing should drop.

It sounds interesting however I have a few problems:

2 USB ports - I plug serato and a drive in, theres nothing left!

Video - HDMI out only. This is great for venues with 1 TV. Not one single place I have ever worked at offers HDMI as an option for video handoff. Its been a few months since I've looked for one, but anyone ever seen a reliable HDMI converter to RCA or Svideo?

15" screen - umm.. yea, explains itself.

Give me VGA out, 5+ USB ports, dual hard drives and 17 or 18" screen and I would consider spending that kind of coin on the laptop.
