Hey Guys,

My name is James Morrison, DJ tMMPo, and I started my company, Mo Music Productions, in 2004 at the age of 12. It has been a steady growth ever since, as I have now DJ-ed numerous weddings, races at the VA Beach Oceanfront, School dances after proms, and so on. I am a Sophomore at Virginia Tech, and I brought my trailer with all my equipment up here with me, looking to get more into club DJing, not for the money, but for the experience of it all. You all have been by far, the nicest group of forum DJs, I have found and it goes to show that there are great people in this business who I can turn to and seek some advice/assistance.

Just to give you a little feel for what I have done, so hopefully some of you could help me, I'll put some pictures here of my setup. Basically, I my system includes, 2 K12's, 2 Behringer B212a's (Backups now), 2 Harbinger Dual 15", a JBL Powered sub, LED lighting, just moved from the M-Audio Xponent to the Numark NS7FX, various other rack gear for a more "Ear-Candy" sound, and I run everything off a 17" MacBook Pro.

I never had a real DJ name until recently when a couple of my buddies on our Drumline and I finally came up with DJ tMMPo (Pronounced "Tempo", Taking the "M,M,& P from Mo Music Productions, which is logo-ed everywhere). I figured that is the least of my worries, but a step.

Now my question, and I apologize for all the babble. I love Mobile DJing, weddings and all those, but my favorites are when there is a dance floor packed with people at a Sorority formal, Ringdance, Benefit rave, as I am sure is your favorite as well. My goal is to somehow get into a dance club, or a bar with a dancing crowd, this year at school, and this summer, back in Virginia Beach. Where do I start? Do I put together some kind of CD? Do I take a business card into the Club managers? How do I get into your realm?

I appreciate all the advice or comments you can take the time to write! Thanks!

Hey Guys,

I appreciate all the advice or comments you can take the time to write! Thanks!
Unless that was a staged/posed pic to show your equipment, start learning to spread dem speakers. They don't look good as headphones.:triwink:

Note taken, I have a couple gigs coming up and will make a change. Thanks!

Reason being:
1. They will sound better.
2. Your Booth area will not look so conspicuous/cluttered.
3. Regardless of what some others may say, it takes up the same footprint.

Yes .. they should be spread a tad bit further out, BUT .. IT DOES take up more footprint. May be the same square footage on the ground, but effectively you've shut off the area between the DJ and the speakers due to cabling, so the further out they are, the more usable floor space you lose .. it's one big tradeoff. Your 2nd photo spread doesn't look that bad (1st is way too close).

Boulder Dash.... Your cables should be run straight back to the wall and then over to your rig whenever possible... Then guests won't trip on them... Obviously a run like that isn't always possible and that's what gaffer's tape is for.

Tisn't Boulder-dash, but it doesn't really matter .. the issue is that with spreading out the speakers, one must take into consideration that the space between and around them are kind of off-limits .. so the further out they are, the more space is off-limits. Guests shouldn't be near the poles (any of them) .. too much of a liability .. So, yes they should be spread appropriately and yes, there are tradeoffs doing so ... All's good.

I think you mean "balderdash". Boulder dash is what you do to get out of the path of rolling rocks.

A cold Rolling Rock sounds good right now.

I will definitely be spreading the system out, at least a little more like the second picture. I do agree that the first is very compact, there was not much room in that catering club, but nevertheless, I see what you have pointed out to me. I really was just aiming to show you guys what I have built up/am working with, to give you a better picture of me.

Now, my real question was getting into the club scene, and some pointers.. It is a college town of Blacksburg, VA, and I figure it is a good place to start. Could anyone shed some light for me?

I do a lot of Clubs and Bars so it usually is not a problem for me when it comes to speaker placement. When I do Hotels and other Venues, I do a site visit and help in the planning of placement of my speakers along with chairs and tables/seating. My Bass Bin(s) usually go in front of my tripods so nobody can trip over them. If I had pole mounts like some of the others then there will not be a tripping hazard either.

My gear is surrounded by a booth/Facade so in reality, there is no trade off for me. I do not like the clutter of speakers around me if I can help it. It is also true that space can be very limited in some venues but I know that there are some who, no matter what the size of the venue, can be found wearing their speakers like headphones.

She is trained so i don't have to say a word. If it ain't spread that why they make drills. All men have a drill, right? If yer don't want me going in the wrong hole in de mountain, then yer better lemme see whats in the valley!:tribiggrin::tribiggrin:
