This is an interesting read from Mobile Beat. Now we know why we should discourage "canned" playlists from Clients. If we allow them to keep giving DJs canned playlists they start to think "they" are the ones doing some of the work. Whats left, just equipment and MC skills. It will be so easy to replace a DJ to save some $$$$$. DJs can argue all they want that it won't work....yes WE know that but the point of the matter is, that it is still a Gig lost never to be recouped.

Being given a canned playlist will be a main reason for me to turn down a gig.

Here is the Mobile Beat article. http://www.mobilebeat.com/pre-packaged-playlists-the-new-dj-challenge/

I will take it and just document next to each song I play off their party list how many people were dancing to the song. I had a Wedding Reception this last Sunday where the song Remind me by Brad Paisley was on their party list. I really didn't want to play the song because I just didn't think a lot of people would dance to it. I was right ......... I watched the Groom go get the Bride and bring her out to the dance floor and they were the only ones dancing.

And maybe the song was special to them! People place songs on their play list for a reason. That is why I had a must play list, play if possible list, and a DNP.
Of course! I really did not think I had to mention that fact. It is a given! The Preplanned playlist is one that leaves no room for the DJ's creativity. In other words, he ends up being a Push Play/Jukebox Style DJ.

If you were a Professional, you would have been proactive and assist tem in choosing an alternative that would have been better received! ;) Just saying!

I did a few gigs with preplanned playlists. In only one case did the couple really know their crowd. The rest were all bombs in which I ended up on plan B.

The one that did work... HELL YEAH! They had hired me because I was the only DJ willing to take this on. They handed me the list at the finalization meeting and when I saw it I knew it would work. They did not care about the order so I mixed it. I HAD A FULL DANCE FLOOR ALL NIGHT! That one gig generated follow on business as well.

But that was one out of maybe ten attempts.

theres ways to get guests to join the bride and groom throughout the evening to songs which have meaning to them. I have mentioned many times about qualification of must plays. I make it so it benefits the client and they feel good about the qualifying as I make it special. Playing from a playlist can become a push play effort but in process when planning with your client you can alter that course with nice additions and considerations in regards to how rigid you must follow such a list. I have done a start to finish gig in my time and though it was odd and not my typical it worked at that event and the customer paid me to play it that way. I presented it as such and the party was a huge success. Make sure you give yourself an out on one of these or pass on it.

Its sort of like the never ending age old issue discussed about DJ location and such. On a rare occasion you have to do what you are given and it is quite alright.

If I can figure out how to attach documents to this board I would love to show you the event I have today.

Every song picked out from beginning to end and I would love to see someone be (As Houston says) proactive with this Bride and her specialized Wedding Reception.

I am.......... I hit the $50,000 mark.

Shouldn't a pro know how to click a little button and attach images...?

If not, with all that cashola yer making, you could pay somebody to do it for ya... ;)

the question to you is, why did you say you hit the mark, who cares, what i make is my own business nobody Else's

the question to you is, why did you say you hit the mark, who cares, what i make is my own business nobody Else's

Why does someone say they are proud of their speaker brand

Why does someone say they are proud of their business model

Why does someone say they are proud of their up lights

That's why I said "I hit the mark"

lets put it this way, the way i take what you said makes it sound like you are rubbing it in peoples face, I'm pretty sure other people here don't care, but thats my opinion and I'm stickin to it
