How much do you think you formed the musical foundation of your kids, especially the ones under 10 years of age? I'm just guessing, but for those of us who have kids, I imagine that they get exposed to a much wider variety of music, more often, than most kids.

For instance, my daughters are 8 years old, and here are some of their favorite entertainers....

Elvis Presley
Will Smith
Radiators
KC & the Sunshine Band ( and all 70's disco )
Michael Jackson, but even moreso, the Jackson 5.
Poison
KISS
Diana Ross & the Supremes ( mostly from my wife, though )

And, of course, they like all that Disney crap, but hey, I can't make them hate it, though I would if I could....

Realistically, though, I doubt most young kids have the musical diversity that kids of DJ's have.

I would agree. My son's Ipod is full of artists/songs his buddies have never heard before. One time while at a soccer tourney a few years ago, he was playing it and they were wanting to hear some of it. They actually liked alot of it, so we hooked it up in one of the car stereos and jammed to it.

All my 12 year old son's friends are very envious of him. They don't like that his Ipod has all the new songs on it all the time.

My wife was pregnant when I first started out and my middle boy heard a lot of music in the womb. You can tell.

Yes, (in his early 20s now) had a very diverse love of music (not enough to become a DJ..he's a diesel mechanic $$)

Growing up, he would borrow my Cds or buy his own. I would hear him listening to what ever his mood was.. Beatles, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Sinatra, Gene Vincent & the Bluecaps, Dylan, Hank Sr. Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Woody Guthrie, lots of classic rock; and of course; Rap, Grunge, new country, Etc.

Neither of my kids had any desire to learn mobile DJing.

My son loves dance music and likes to comes in my office when I'm editing songs. Very often, he breaks out the dance moves. He didn't get the rhythm from me or my wife!

He also loves to sit in the DJ booth at our restaurant/club account when we go there for lunch.

Here's a quick video of something he did that caught me totally off guard.

The scary thing is, he knows when he's being funny and actually asked me to video him!

I don't know about kids.... but whenever I sing Karaoke in my SHOWER... the cats are right their watching and listening.... and on occation have been known to add their own voices as my backup singers....

Does that count? :sqwink:

Hey Rob I fixed that for you :)

Last year my son would sing...

Handlebars by Flobot.

Then it was...

Good Girls Go Bad: Cobra Starship

now it's.....

Funhouse: Pink

He does like other songs too...

like...

Rockin the Beer Gut

I guess Ass is okay if they arent in middle school.

Or when parents are confident enough in their parenting skills to teach kids right from wrong and how to act in public. :sqwink:

Not all parents are and that's why schools have to be so PC and DJs can't play radio hits. Some of these stupid parents think the schools should teach morals.

He was just singing along with the song. He doesn't use the word ass on a regular basis... if he did, he'd be chewing on a bar of soap!

Both Brandon and my 6 year old daughter are very worldly and I am proactive with them in teachng about the everyday life issues. This includes drilling into them that drugs are bad, smoking is gross and that you don't say bad words. I've even told my 6 year old that she can't kiss boys until she's 21!:sqerr:

My kids are lucky... the have Mommy & Daddy around almost 24/7.

Kids are enrolled in music lessons. We play rock band together. I try to watch what we play around the house or in the car. I like to keep the blinders on. My oldest is 10. I like to expose them to jazz and country, good old rock, funk etc. I watch contents as feasible.

Most of all I just try to let them know that being on the radio doesn't always equal talent.

Most importantly, no music videos.

They are only innocent once.

You have similar parenting approaches as me.

I know I am not in the majority of my beliefs on swear words, but this is how I feel, and how I will raise my kids........

It will be ok for my children to use some of the words very randomly...and no not excessively.

And the time my kids uses any of those words to make fun of someone else, it's time for a little bar soap, or a firm spanking, or time out, you name it.

I think "swear" words are not bad, until you use them in a mean manner towards other people.

But again I am in the minority of this, so yes I know it is going to be a problem in the future, but you know what...theres more serious things in life to worry about. Like, drugs, alcohol...STD's, believing in God, treating people well.

I thought your video was funny myself.

I'm just guessing here, but does this mean I won't get an invite for Christmas dinner...? :sqlaugh:

BTW, as to the OP:

Yeah, I agree -- but with a caveat...

They have to listen to the same stuff you like. My parents loved music, and it was played constantly in my house -- mostly country. I liked it when I was young, but hated it during my rebellious streak, when it was "my parent's music" (which ended a couple weeks ago)... :sqlaugh:

My Daughter is in first grade and she occasionally comes home from school with some stories that I have to ask her to repeat. Most recent was how some girls didn't want to play with her because she was white.

That pissed me off!

Our area is very mixed with black and hispanic. Can't believe they judge at such a young age. Or that their parents teach them that.

Don't you know cussing is a gateway drug to meth?

j/k of course
