Canute had a good idea with the post cards thing and the other things he mentioned. My question is what would you put on the post cards to get peoples attention? What I'm saying is what type of clients would you be targeting your services to at this event? What type of events do you mainly do Papa Duce? That would be my concern since you said it's to be in a grassy area outdoors and not a fancy venue. If you were going after brides I would suspect there will be some there looking to get married in the future and looking for a DJ in the future. So I would be careful about the approach you use to win over potential clients.

Mix, there is more to DJ life than Brides & Weddings, much more! Less PITA too! ;) Papa has been around the block enough to know what he is doing!

I don't do weddings as I grew to hate doing them. But in the last year I have done everything from corporate, to, BBQs, to HS reunion, a company holiday party, a company reunion, a 51st birthday party.... I have zero desire to book weddings. If it was possible to have less than zero, I would have less than zero. I can't take another nasty bride who doesn't give a damn about the guests having a good time, or just wants a living jukebox.

A paid DJ since I was 14 years old in the 70's.

I was talking about what was to be his target. I only mentioned weddings as a thought. That wasn't meant to say that's what his aim would be. I just simply wanted him to think about what he wanted printed on the post cards that would attract the potential clients that he would want to do business with. That's all.

yeah papa has been around a lot lol

And Canute responded to you - Papa has been around long enough. He knows his target .. and his market.

$65 is a ridiculously low fee... probably barely covers the cost of cleaning up after you.

It's a community event - you either want to be a part of it or not. Maybe you'll turn some new clients possibly not but, I wouldn't make that your point of decision. It's about being a part of something in your community and connecting with people - not necessarily jobs.

The reality is, you are just as likely to show some mom's how to throw their own do-it-yourself bubble party as you are to find mom's who would pay you to do it for them. Either way you are giving something back while donating just $65 to the effort.

Ah, Dave, it isn't about the money per se, but that I feel like I shouldn't have to pay to be the entertainer. .

That's exactly what I think. Yea, 12k people are a good place to showcase, but, they don't even value your service enough to "give" you a slot? And over $65? No way, no how.

Good to see you, Pap. Sure wish you'd hang around here some more.

No, it is about jobs, and only jobs for me..... and I clean up after myself 100%.

And don't be an idiot.... no mother is going to buy bubble machines. And hundreds of mom's have seen me do this over the years. Literally hundred's. Maybe you should speak when you have a freaking clue.

They certainly are not going to buy or rent a bubble machine to use for one day. By the way I'm just curious. How much does a bubble machine cost?

Mix, it depends.... the 3 I bought years ago were $175 each.... There are more expensive and less expensive. Mine are from Chauvet..... and ar the only Chauvet products that I have ever had a good experience. As far as renting, I have yet to find a place locally that rents them. I once had a client that wanted me to have 5 bubble machines, but I couldn't find the extra 2 for her.

DJ MixMasterMachoMachoTheBubblePartyMan!

Coming soon to a strip club near you.

Yo Mix a good market for bubble parties would be Summit, Westfield and Scotch Plains. Lots of hot baby mama's out here always looking for something to do with the seeds. A cool place to check out is Pump It Up in Roselle Park for ideas. If kids were my thing I would look into Bubble Parties. I enjoy spinning at weddings and other general events. I don't have the patients for baby sitting kids except for my own.

Then I suggest you not do this because, if you're joining a community event purely with an expectation of jobs you're just gonna end up resentful and bitter.

As for the cost - you won't be cleaning up after the crowd, which is a cost associated with every public event along with police, EMS, water and electrical service. They are not providing you with promotion - just an opportunity to be recognized and give back to the community. $65 is not even a full tank of gas - not a lot to ask for.

I've sold and rented bubble machines and I know that yes, moms & dads do buy them and host their own parties with bubbles, music, and hula hoops. Anyone with little kids is familiar with all the kinds of things you can do with bubbles. There are whole websites devoted to it and planning kids parties. I understand there is a Bubble/DJ plan that John Allo put together - but, it should be common sense that he is not the originator of using bubbles to entertain children. That idea was already in play for a very, very, long time before DJs adopted it. For every parent who can afford and prefer to hire you there will be another who realizes they create their own bubble party for under $100. That's just reality.

I'll stay focused on the big picture, thank you; and leave the freakin' clues for the myopic.

Some are as low as $29, the most popular are around $79 and the larger models are about $150.
Fluid from commercial vendors with a registered MSDS is about $11 a gallon, while toy distributors sell it for about $2 - $5 gallon.

It isn't MY community.... not even my township. But if I was looking for advice on acquiring new bubble party events, I think Proformance might be the very last DJ in the world that I would ask for ideas. I think he might tell a kid on Christmas morning that Santa Clause doesn't exist. Or yell at a kid at a bubble event for singing the wrong words to the Spongebob theme song. With 50 - 75 bubble parties a year, I think I have a clue.... How many does Proformance do? Would you even let him near your kids? He's mighty loud and scary. Even when he's wrong. Or adjusting the facts to fit his point.

...Interesting fantasy. If you look in the mirror there's someone fortunate to be noticed, get invited, offered a chance to demonstrate, and yet so indignant over a measly $65 donation as to seek a pile-on via the internet.

Perhaps to avoid getting your bubble burst you could post more accurate titles. Instead of "Need an opinion..." be honest with something like "Need someone to commiserate.." or "Misery loves company.." That way you'll never be challenged to think outside your bubble?

OK, thanks all. I have the event now..... and on my terms. :)

I got a call back from a different woman from the township and I flat out asked why they wanted to charge me since I was going to be an entertainer... She gave that about 10 seconds of thought and agreed with me.... so I will be doing it for free, but at least I don't have to pay $65.

Should be lots of fun, and hopefully it pays off with some future parties.
