I'm sure everyone has 1, 5, 10 etc. amount of songs that are a favorite to you, do you play them at a event and what are they ?

My favorite is 70s Progressive Rock (Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Yes, etc.) .. I play them at backyard events, but rarely at a paid gig (unless requested) .. not really dance music .. even though Pink Floyd had an album called "A Collection of Great Dance Songs" .. :)

At events, my favorite is disco .. and I play it fairly often.

I grew up in the 60's, and there was some GREAT music from that decade, but my favorite music was from the 80's. Though I like the 70's as well, the music from the 80's is a lot more danceable, so yes, I have a list I play from during my gigs. However, a lot of my gigs are a mixture of recent top 40 and country. I don't always get to play my 80's or even my 70's and 60's favorites.

I will also pull from the 80s .. Dazz, MJ, Men Without Hats, Soft Cell .. plus I always add some Stones and Beatles. Most of my gigs are folks 40+.

For kids, I play Top 40 .. regardless of my affection toward it.

when I played at the bar white lines was huge, no parking on the dance floor, Frankie goes to Hollywood, wild wild west, low rider, ah those were some great times

My 2 personal favorite songs of all times in this order are Colonel Abrams "Release The Tension" and the Isley Brothers "Climbing Up The Ladder". I always wish I could have been Ernie Isley. Or at least play the lead guitar the way he can. As far as when it comes to doing an event I like music that will keep me safe. Music that I don't have to worry about people getting crazy wanting to eventually get into a fight. That's why I love to play oldies but goodies and house music. Or what some would call disco. I don't care to do events where all they want is today's rap music and stuff like that the entire event. I usually will pass on such an event unless it's in a very fancy expensive catering hall.

For dancing - Salsa. Hanging with Brother Vietnam Vets over a beer, a song I try to live by - Simple Man, Skynyrd.

It's not about me - it's about the client. I play what I think will be liked by them.

So if you're asking about 'go to' songs..my girl and cupid shuffle get played at every wedding, motown works well at weddings too. Eminem and TuPac not so much. LOL

this saturday I have a HS dance - I really doubt I'll play any motown. Maybe an 80s song..MAYbe. Well, Thriller gets a nice response..would footloose? Probably not so much. YMCA? maybe. If I can keep the floor full without out and it's not requested, then it won't get played.

I'm sure they'll want Black Beatles..if I can find a clean version I'll play it. If not..no. The F word is a no-no for me at schools even though yesterday morning on teh school bus 2 8th grade girls were tossing it back and forth loudly.

Bobby harris from the Dazz band was a neighbor of mine in the late 90's. My big claim to fame. Indians shortstop Omar Vizquel and his hot wife lived on the other side of me. Great parties.

And then I got married.

I never said its about me, we as DJs have access to all kinds of music and some of them have a very catchy beat that some people have never heard so would you play them

I've played a lot of stuff that's pretty obscure... it's fun when someone comes up and asks what's playing. Doesn't happen much anymore; people just Shazam it.[emoji1]

I just took the Christmas music stations off this list, but this is the most recently listened stations list on my Pandora:

Pandora Stations.PNG

My personal listening music is pretty mood or activity based. I listen to stuff like Deep House a lot during the day as I work. It keeps me grooving, but also isn't difficult to still focus on something I'm reading or writing. The new music I download to DJ with I load onto a thumb drive and play in the car so that I can get familiar enough with intro and outro points, or which remixes I want to play.

Among a long list of favorite tracks of all time...

Kool & The Gang - Get Down On It
Dave Brubeck - Take 5
Rise Against - Swing Life Away
O.A.R. - Home
311 - Amber
Naughty By Nature - Uptown Anthem
Lupe Fiasco - Hip Hop Saved My Life
Jay Z - Interlude (Public Service Announcement)
Zac Brown Band - Whatever It Is

To me there are "catchy" songs from every genre. I don't know of any "go to" songs that work in any genre.

I find satisfaction in seeing that I've read the crowd correctly and they are liking the music I'm playing.

I don't play obscure stuff unless it's requested. I find most people want to hear music they know. Sometimes they forget the name. If they are the type of people that likes to hear music they've never heard, they typically will do that on their own.
