I love the idea of live pics and texting.
Can ANYONE add pictures to the slide show, or just the photog?
Also, in your honest opinion, is it really possible to do these WELL, without another person on staff?
I have enough trouble concentrating on the music, then add lighting (something MORE than just sound-active)...
and at that point, there is no way I could ALSO be screening texts and fiddling with pics.

It's easy. Once you get into the rhythm, it's not a problem at all. Start a song, pickup the camera, click-click-click. I have people send me cell phone shots, but (for whatever reason) I don't put them into the slideshow. Also, no, guests cannot add either pics or messages to the screen without it going thru the DJ (or person handlin live-pics). That is a recipe for disaster. I regularly get seriously inappropriate crap from guests.

^^^^ This is what I was thinking too. I was all set up to do a live slide show when I first started almost 3 years ago, but had second thoughts about actually DOING it because just doing music was as much as I could handle alone. I had my lights on sound active too. The thing with me was presenting the pictures uniformly. If someone texts a picture to you, or emails it to you it can be any size THEY choose. I didn't want to have tiny pics and giant pics mixed together. I found a little application that would resize pictures quickly and easily, but it took some small effort on my part to run the pics through the app, then move them to the slideshow folder. Wasn't sure I could handle that much of a distraction without doing a crappy job on the music, so I've never done it. I even bought a nice Benq short-throw projector I've never used. I'll do it someday, but probably not without having an assistant to help setup and run the video side.

Hmm...FAILURE!

You MUST have internet/cloud connections for ANY of this to work..alas, us country folk lack that.

Barn wedding saturday on a farm in no mans land..phone had 4G and made a hot spot, but not enough I guess for either laptop to connect. They've both connected in the past in less rural areas.

Gonna be a long while 'round here for this type of thing to 'catch on' and for streaming music to be reliable.

The text might not be option in areas with poor reception; but you can setup for images to go from a camera to your laptop without an internet connection. This would still allow for a live slideshow. This is how I run mine, the images I take with the camera never even hit the web. I use one of these (Amazon.com: Eyefi Mobi 8GB Class 10 Wi-Fi SDHC Card with 90-day Eyefi Cloud Service (Mobi-8): Electronics).

I usually just pull the SD card from the camera, copy the pics, done. I also want the ability to only put up photos that pass muster.

Of course, if there's no cell coverage you can't receive texts. I've run into that plenty of times but still can take photos and copy them to the slideshow. You're looking for excuses.

no...if I don't have internet access then a)spotify etc won't work (built into VDJ now) and we in some thread talked about folks not buying music files but streaming..not here, not now or anytime soon and b) ask the dj is built into VDJ as well - why should I reinvent the wheel when it's already done and free?

SO yes, I can in theory hand out my cell number and tell everyone there to text me...which takes time to delete after the event, PITA and un-productive to say the least.

I'm not looking for excuses - i'm looking for shit to work like it's supposed to! I don't think I'm asking all that much - just want 'them' to deliver on their promises!

So I KNOW it wont' work at this venue..will it work at the next one? I don't know..so how can I market something that may not work? Gonna make me look real bad when I can't make it work at their wedding and of course THAT will be the one main reason they booked me over someone else.

Get a Google voice number (it's free) and turn on forwarding to your phone just during events. It forwards voice and/or texts.

This right here, this is what I use for the DJ line, plus side, you get free voicemail transcripts.

One of the neat things you can do with GV is change the info shown on the caller ID , I have mine set up to show AZ Deejay instead of a number, down side, you dont what number they are calling from unless you log into to Google Voice and look at the call logs.

Other down side for , I cant call out using that my GV number, the app doesnt work for me, but that could be more of issue on my end since I am using a Blackberry and side loaded andorid based apps.

If you are near a computer, or connect to the website from your phone, you can click on the number to call and it will ask you which of your numbers to send it to. Select the number and it will call you and after you answer connects to the other end. That way Caller ID is correct. We have it sending to 3 phones, so whoever is available can answer.

Hmm, did not know that, thanks for the info, I am going try that.

I always want it to have the company number for consistency to the customer and so everyone on our side gets a copy of any voicemails or texts sent. That's how I found it. We still need to communicate if we talk to them, but messages are distributed to all.

Where do you setup the Caller ID Name? Just looked and couldn't find it.

When you are on the main Google Voice page, on the left side where the message/phone/voicemail icons are , the last one is the three dots, click on that, select legacy Google Voice, when you are on the legacy site, go over the right side and click on the setting button, then you will see the tabs in the middle on screen, select the call tab, once you are on the calls tab, the second option you should see is caller ID( Incoming) ,two choices, display callers number, or display my google voice number, select the display my google voice number.

I have my GV number saved in my phonebook so it shows the company name

Ahhhh, OK, I have that set. I don't like answering random calls on my cell (just got a new domain over the weekend and have had probably 20 calls for website help and SEO services....should have checked Private), but will if it is for the company. I originally set it up to let me know it was the GV number. I thought you meant on outgoing calls it added the ID Name.

That would be nice if the outgoing caller ID we can could change.

Rick, I have it set to send the photos to one folder where I can look at them first, if it looks good I move it to the folder being used by the Live Slide Show.
