I think you can also dial 911 from any cell phone, even without a plan, even if it's locked, as long as the battery is charged.

This is true.

I tired Traktor on my phone .. not worth the effort. It's OK on the iPad .. just OK.

+1: It's ok. Not the same experience as on a machine, but it would work in a crunch.

Just a reminder .. idjnow.com has 20% off everything (with code CYBER20) .. ends tonight. If you are looking for higher end gear, RCF and such, you can save some coin. I bought the Denon Media player I was eyeing .. best previous price I got was $365 shipped .. got it for $320. (DN-300z). RCF Evox 8 are $1440 .. a pair with cases and cart are $2950 (I got a similar deal from Mike Pyle as well last January).

Was also looking at RCF Sub 705-AS II ($760 each) and HD-32A speakers .. just no room for stuff until I clean out some more.

OK guys...I bought that Lumia 640 and it works for what I wanted - camera and video.

One question though...when I copy and paste the photos and videos to a PC, each video also has a TN file with it.

They are MP4's but they do not play through Windows media player - only Quick Time.

How can I make the videos play with MS media player? Am I missing a step here?

The photos work fine...

Were you able to play MP4 files in your Windows Media Player before? WMP does not play MP4 files unless you install the CODEC. You can download one for free. (Haali Media Splitter; also known as MatroskaSplitter or FFDShow)

In this specific instance, when you see a '.tn' associated to a video file, it is a thumbnail file. You can also verify this by looking at the file size, it should be small. Images will not usually have a 'tn' file associated with it. Because these are thumbnails, you can safely ignore / delete the 'tn' files.

The reason the mp4's play with Quicktime is because that's what they're 'associated' with. You can manually correct this by right clicking on an MP4 and selecting 'Open With', 'Choose Default Program', select 'Windows Media Player' and click the 'Done' button.

They originally were automatically set to open with Windows media player and that did not work. So I changed the default to Quick Time and that did work.

Ok, then the reason they open with QT is because that's what you told it to do. You can change it at anytime. If for whatever reason, you're still on an older version of Windows where WMP did not have mp4 support, then you would need to obtain a CODEC from the web. MP4's are natively supported by WMP on Win7.

If you are on an XP machine, you really need to think about updating and taking the XP machine offline.

Be careful when downloading codecs. Some have imbedded malware. VLC plays MP4 files and can be downloaded for free. It's possible that installing VLC will also load the MP4 codec that will allow WMP to play them as well.

VLC has been my go to player for years .. that and iTunes.

Only issue with VLC is they don't have some of the codecs on the iPad/iPhone version (AC3 video being a big one) due to licensing issues. On the PC, you can download codec packs .. can't do that in iOS .. need to have them compiled in.

It's a 18 month old machine running Windows 7 Professional.

So should it not already have that CODEC? How can I check?

In VLC, go to the "Tools" menu and select "Plugins and Extensions" .. then on the Plugins tab, you should see a list of the codecs installed. or did you mean WMP?

In WMP, you can look under "Organize" .. then "Options" and go to tab "plugins"

I dumped WMP as the default a while ago as it uses SO MUCH system resources.

It should be able to play MP4's natively. What message do you get when you try?

Note: There may be some mp4's that just won't play (has to do with how they're created).
