Many of you are aware of Linux because of DJ Dan's relationship with it. It is a great OS not only because it is 100% free, but it is much more stable and secure than windows is (please note "linux" is NOT an Operating System. It is an open-source code that has been put to use to make different, usable Operating systems).

I have been using the linux and debian based "Ubuntu" on and off for about a year now. I will say it is great and REALLY hassle free because you do not have to prove you bought the software with key codes and online scans. In fact, nobody buys this software!!! It is 100% FREE!!!!!!! The folks at Ubuntu will even send you a free set of discs!!! so....please....go to....

http://www.ubuntu.com

right now and download this revolutionary piece of software....You have NOTHING to lose. Ubuntu offers a "Live CD" option which means you can give it a try without affecting you computer at all as the entire OS runs from the CD. This OS is just under 700MB (CD size) and will fit on just one CD. So why not try it? it's free!!! the BEST things in life really ARE free.***

Now, for the real reason I am telling you this. There are a few programs out designed for DJing on Linux. Is this a replacement for Virtual DJ or PCDJ? no, i am not saying that. I am saying you may discover something you really find useful. I am still testing these and, though i wouldn't use it at a gig yet, they are fairly nice. Given some time, these programs may become a standard just like VDJ and PCDJ. Here is a list with links to these programs...

http://sound.condorow.net/ddj.html

Please try them out and dont bash for ideas. This is just one i had and i figured if many people enjoy these programs, we can give feedback to the developers and create the ultimate DJ software for the Ultimate OS.

Linux was difficult for me at first, and still is. but once you get used to this new way of thinking and the fully customizable layout, you begin to see what different ideas can lead to. Best of all "ubuntu" comes with a free open-source program called "openoffice.org"** this program is a mimic of microsoft word and is also free. There is also a free image editing software named "gimp." supposedly, it is the same as photoshop, but with a different layout. I have yet to confirm this though.

Vista??? that unsecure and buggy POS? puh-leeze. Ubuntu is jam-packed with drivers for nearly ALL devices (and a special program for those Palms)

So, either stick with windows XP, give Ubuntu a risk-free run, or upgrade to vista. The choice is yours. I just thought i would tell you about what i have learned. Just to give you more options than microsoft alone. I am not an expert and never label myself as such. So, please forgive any errors i have made. The only thing I label myself as is a proud linux user who is trying to spread the word and happiness i have received.

DJ Dan.....you are not alone.......

I am a proud and happy linux user.

(who is sadly restricted by windows)

happy computing,

**OpenOffice.org is readily available for linux and windows at, you guessed it, openoffice.org.

***There are also some other linux based OSes out there like "SUSE" (i believe the current version is 10.1). this Operating System is NOT free, however.

There's a thread here somewhere about my move back to Windows. I still think Linux is great and Ubuntu is the best distrobution I tried.

My problem was media is a headache, you cannot play MP3's with installing illegal hacks. I'm not worried about being chased down for installing them it's just a pain in the arse.

Plus I needed some Windows only software for accounting so I bought a copy of XP home, I use XP for day to day surfing but keep a Ubuntu partition for my webmaster work.

Check out Automatix it's a script that installs the must haves and some goodies automatically with out using terminal or Synaptic. It fulls in the gaps that the default install doesn't include. :)

What problems with mp3's??? I was able to play them under Debian Linux without any problems at all right from the start.

You Linux/firefox/openoffice people crack me up.....how cute! :sqlaugh:

I was going to port my software over to Linux, but nobody wanted to pay for it :sqeek: One of these days, I'll finish the port to MAC.

I like open source, but I needs to eat...

That's a big problem in the linux community it seems no one wants to pay for anything because a majority of the software is free. I think that's why many developers don't both releasing software. :(

It is a great OS not only because it is 100% free, but it is much more stable and secure than windows is (please note "linux" is NOT an Operating System. It is an open-source code that has been put to use to make different, usable Operating systems).

I'm not sure if what you wrote up there was a typo, since you go on to say that Linux is an O/S, then say Linux is not an O/S. Linux is most certainly an O/S.

In a technical sense he is correct, Linux is the name of actual kernel. OS Distributions are built around it. But since those OS that use the Linux kernel all start with the same kernel, I guess it would also still be correct to just say Linux:sqconfused:

I tried linux a bunch... Before being a KJ I was a sysadmin for 10 years. I still do contract work from time to time.

There are some great apps.

http://terminatorx.org/
Real time "scratching" software. Check out the turntables section, you'll see my creation there :)

I still use linux a bunch. Every website I have runs on a nice linux server with php, mysql, apache, and ssh access. I love linux for stuff I can just toss into a corner and not want to worry about. Rock solid reliable.

Would I use it for KJ'ing? Nah... It blows like a whalespout as a desktop. There's so many different sound drivers it's pretty confusing. You have ALSA, OSS, and kernel drivers. Different apps are written to different sound API's and solving dependancies between them is the real pain here.

There's also the whole issue of Fraunhofer not licensing the mp3 codec for use in linux. As someone else said, it's not hard hack to put mp3 support in there, just a pitb.
