Many of you are aware of Linux because of DJ Dan's relationship with it. It is a great OS not only because it is 100% free, but it is much more stable and secure than windows is (please note "linux" is NOT an Operating System. It is an open-source code that has been put to use to make different, usable Operating systems).
I have been using the linux and debian based "Ubuntu" on and off for about a year now. I will say it is great and REALLY hassle free because you do not have to prove you bought the software with key codes and online scans. In fact, nobody buys this software!!! It is 100% FREE!!!!!!! The folks at Ubuntu will even send you a free set of discs!!! so....please....go to....

right now and download this revolutionary piece of software....You have NOTHING to lose. Ubuntu offers a "Live CD" option which means you can give it a try without affecting you computer at all as the entire OS runs from the CD. This OS is just under 700MB (CD size) and will fit on just one CD. So why not try it? it's free!!! the BEST things in life really ARE free.***
Now, for the real reason I am telling you this. There are a few programs out designed for DJing on Linux. Is this a replacement for Virtual DJ or PCDJ? no, i am not saying that. I am saying you may discover something you really find useful. I am still testing these and, though i wouldn't use it at a gig yet, they are fairly nice. Given some time, these programs may become a standard just like VDJ and PCDJ. Here is a list with links to these programs...

Please try them out and dont bash for ideas. This is just one i had and i figured if many people enjoy these programs, we can give feedback to the developers and create the ultimate DJ software for the Ultimate OS.
Linux was difficult for me at first, and still is. but once you get used to this new way of thinking and the fully customizable layout, you begin to see what different ideas can lead to. Best of all "ubuntu" comes with a free open-source program called "openoffice.org"** this program is a mimic of microsoft word and is also free. There is also a free image editing software named "gimp." supposedly, it is the same as photoshop, but with a different layout. I have yet to confirm this though.
Vista??? that unsecure and buggy POS? puh-leeze. Ubuntu is jam-packed with drivers for nearly ALL devices (and a special program for those Palms)
So, either stick with windows XP, give Ubuntu a risk-free run, or upgrade to vista. The choice is yours. I just thought i would tell you about what i have learned. Just to give you more options than microsoft alone. I am not an expert and never label myself as such. So, please forgive any errors i have made. The only thing I label myself as is a proud linux user who is trying to spread the word and happiness i have received.
DJ Dan.....you are not alone.......
I am a proud and happy linux user.
(who is sadly restricted by windows)
happy computing,
rlelek
**OpenOffice.org is readily available for linux and windows at, you guessed it, openoffice.org.
***There are also some other linux based OSes out there like "SUSE" (i believe the current version is 10.1). this Operating System is NOT free, however.
