The reason why those places lost money and closed was because they only were charging $5.00 to get in and had open bar for 2 hours. That was too cheap and the $5.00 a head wasn't making them enough money to cover the expense for the 2 hour open bar.

But if you adjust for inflation, $5 in 1981 dollars, was wqual to $12.18 in 2011, and is even more now. We generally don't have basic cover charges around here, unless there's a name band playing -- and even that's rare -- they usually just raise the drink prices when the band is playing. As I mentioned earlier, a $3 Corona, goes to $6 or more when the band starts playing.
But most places do run regular drink specials -- jello shots, domestic beer and well drinks. Name brand stuff costs you the full price.
