sucking up is when you agree with someone all the time, just to be in their good graces
being nice (or EXTRA nice) to someone you are working with is neither of these.
it's simple professional courtesy.
and since I play the same places with the same vendors quite often, I consider them my friends.
So I help them out, the same as I would ANY friend of mine. In return, they take care of me.
Everybody is happy, and gets something out of the relationship.
If you have a good relationship with the people you work with
you don't have to worry about "demanding their respect"....
they'll be more than GLAD to help you out

Being a pacifist...I'd rather make friends than make waves.
I find it helps me enjoy my job a whole lot more...when vendors LIKE working with me at an event.
I still get respect, but I feel I earned it, rather than demanded it.
We have one in this area who would meet a prestigious vendor and then he would 'put the move on'. Omaha Steak gift set and lavish their sales staff w/ lunches. While the staff might fall for that, the top dawg knows he is being 'bought'.
But at the same time, he suffers from 'foot in mouth' that in many cases ruins all apparent good will up to this point. Thus is always back peddling and playing 'kiss up' even more.
Like mentioned before, I would rather build and nurture relationships on trust, and piece of mind that I am not going to make their job difficult, and knowing their clients will be well cared for.
That way they are inoculated against any attempts by others to 'buy in'.
