Is 50's music dead? What about 60's music?

Papa no offense but you seem to have a limited genre base to work with in your area. Im unsure its not just your preconceived opinion weighing in on your view. I do know area has its no's and yes's/ Most anywhere I play Atomic Dog or Brick House it would pack the floor. However here in Vancouver area it pretty much kills the floor. However no matter where I have played in my past. 4 US states, 7 countries I have always been able to fit in 50's and 60's of some sort. I didnt play Van Morrison-Brown Eyed Girl nor had it requested until I moved to Vancouver area.

Papa, my mom is 72 and she loves to dance. She goes dancing with her boyfriend quite often and 50's is one of her fav's. She never makes requests but waits for a good tune to dance to. Did you read my last post? It sounds like you're not playing 50's by choice since you are the one in command. Are you telling me that EVERY song you play is a request, I doubt that. In that case, you can definitely try to mix a few in. I see young girls dancing to 50's tunes all the time at my events. It's all in the flow of your mix. Set it up right, and they will dance! :)

It's simple Jon... If NOBODY is asking, I'm not likely to play it. And I haven't had a request for 50's music at all in 2+ years. When they ask for Motown, I am thrilled, and play it. When the rarely ask for 60's, I am far less thrilled usually, but I play it.

I'm not going to play stuff that NEVER gets requested... like the 50's.

BTW, I know this, because I keep a database on my requests.

Papa,

I was in a bar full of nothing but college kids (mostly girls) last night!

Five of the songs for the night are on the list I posted! The floor filled and stayed full until the set was done, I do not get the same reaction from Hiphop or Modern rock songs!

Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry
Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On - Jerry Lee Lewis
La Bamba - Ritchie Valens
Shout - Isley Brothers

and the slow song for that set was......

Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers

I'm glad you doubt that, especially since I didn't say that. But with my database that goes back to 2006 showing only 4 requests for 50's music, and none in the last 2 years, I am pondering its death. That is all.

You're missing my point... When was the last time you heard someone rave about the Big Mac? That's what I thought... Yet they still sell millions every year cause people love them. Go figure...

Try this, play Rock Around The Clock at your next event and let us know what happens. If they are dancing and you are not sure what to follow it up with, try Rockin' Robin.

I'm NOT missing your point. I just have my own point of view.

Other than that, you also happen to live in Hip-Hop-Ville, America!

That would probably explain the Motown as well.

Go to Alabama, and you will find a noticeable difference in what people want to hear. Do some Shag parties in NC/SC. Hell, do some parties in upstate NY.

I think you should move Son... :sqlaugh:

I've been to the Shag convention in Myrtle Beach, twice.

Papa,

No one asked last night either I just played them because they wanted to dance, I picked them because they were pretty upbeat happy songs!

Yeah, but you keep going back to Philly -- haven't you learned anything yet...

Let's face it Son, black chicks dig you, you dig black chicks. You can never go back to white America... :sqlaugh:

Groove dude :D

YouTube- you sexy thing

And that is fine.... I'm not telling anybody NOT to play them.

Papa,

My point was is the songs don't have to be request for people to enjoy and dance to them!

Papa no direct slam to you. I was saying it cause you have in the past passed on many gigs due to music. It seems you have been able to be selective and like many DJs enjoy playing the songs you are comfortable with and possibly wouldnt consider adventure in song selection at a gig unless you were only requested to and that wouldnt necessarily be a givewn since you wont play certain stuff atleast as you mentioned in the past.

to stick to topic though. No and no. If one buries it and never revives it then it is dead in their library. I continue to resurrect both and many times folks say wow I havent heard these great songs in so long. Thanks for playing them.

The sad thing here is the association of AGE with the GENRE. Coke has been around since 1373 and has become increasingly popular through the generations. Why is that? Well, there's the fact that it's appealing to the masses, but more so, it's being exposed them.

Something appealing can't be appreciated without exposure. It's not anyone's fault as to when they were born. Choice and variety has been stripped of the latter generations. A big factor is the fact that most new grandparents are the age of yesterday's parents. The torch can't be passed if it's allowed to burn out.

My 12 year old is more musically diversified than most kids. This would still be the fact even if I weren't a DJ. I'm a DJ because I'm more musically diversified than my peers. I became that way in the same fashion. Exposure.

I hope for the sake of diversity that those of us that can play the music do so. The American music of the past played a huge roll in the documentation and shaping of our nation. It shouldn't be allowed to disappear.

But 50's is NOT an area I am uncomfortable with in the least. And i actually like it, though not as much as I used to. And I have a library that has at least 500 songs from that decade.

Zero requests in the last 2 years. Zero. And only 2 in the last 4.

So do you, ON YOUR OWN, whip out the songs from the 30's and 40's? ( other than big band )
