For those of you that don't know Neal, he's a pretty cool DJ and has lots of good ideas. I don't think Neal posts here but we can work on that.

Anyway, I got an e-mail the other day from Mark Ferrell at DJ America talking about Neal's list and I figured what's it gonna cost me to look. So, I read Mark's e-mail and realize that neal is selling the list and there's a website listed. Again, what's it gonna cost me to look?

So, pop over to the website, read Neal's story about the whole thing and take a chance. I just got it today and I paid $19.95 for it.

OK, playlist right? Well, this is a playlist on sterroids and it will be very useful for those times when I come up dry. It is in Excel so it can be searched and reorganized any way you like to make it more useful. I'm going to load it on the gig computer and use it from there.

Here's Mark's e-mail:

If you haven't heard about Neal Howard's Ultimate Playlist, you really need to.

Neal has taken years to compile and organize a "playlist cheat sheet" just for those times when you find yourself stuck for something to play. You know, it's happened to all of us...brain freeeeeze!

Quick! Get the playlist. Name your price! And do it soon. I hear the price is going up!! Since so many DJs have already purchased it he's been upgrading it a lot to make it more user friendly. And the price will be going up when the upgrade comes out (in the next day or two). But everyone who has the current version will get the next upgrade at no charge.

There's a really funny little story how this all came about. You can read about it and order the UPL from his site:

And don't worry if you don't like it, just tell Neal and he'll give you all your money back.

You won't be disappointed.

Thanks for reading,
Mark K Ferrell
Disc Jockey America

Now, Neal is offering anybody that recommends this list a piece of the pie. You really don't have to do that as far as I am concerned because I bought it and think it is useful enough to share the information with you; however, if you want to mention "Tom Ohlendorf sent me" I won't argue with you. Of course, if you don't like it Neal will give you your money back and I'll have to give mine back to him but I'm betting you'll like it.

The URL is: http://www.atlantasbestdj.com/playlist.htm

You can tell him about this post too. Who knows, maybe that'll get him over here and we can all benefit from his input.

:BangHead: You're joking, right? Selling a playlist? Part of the fun of being a DJ is to study one's own music library and figuring out what songs are best for various situations! What works for one crowd doesn't necessarily work for another crowd, regardless of the fundamental factors (e.g. preferred genre, situation, song order). If you want a playlist, just hop on the forums and do a quick search; many have been posted over the past few years.

This is just unbelievable! :yoohno:

and if ya act now we will send ya not only one but three amazing lists for Bar mitzvah's, Polka Parties and that Russian Wedding you havent a clue what to do with.

Tom:

Let me get this right. For years, you've been about as anti "worth" as anyone I've encountered (or am I misinterpreting your longstanding issue(s) with Peter Merry?) and you received and opened an email from Mark Ferrell, soliciting you consider purchasing Neal Howard's playlist(s)?? You then bought it, and are now PROMOTING it???

Sorry, but this is a pretty lame money grab, but then again, I've come to expect nothing less from the Ferrelite camp.

Just because I disagree with the whole worth movement doesn't mean that I can't take advice from them. If even the person I hate most on this earth makes something useful available to me I'll use it.

I am promoting it because I think it is a useful tool. I have no problems with Neal selling it.

Anna, it is for the dry moments in the heat of a show. I have play lists I have built from this forum, from Pro DJ, and even from DJ Chat. I use them for dry moments just like I will this one. A tool is a tool to me.

While a tool may be a tool. I don't want to hear anyone promoting this sort of stuff ever complain about hobbyists, part-timers, illegal music users, etc (not saying that you do Tom, just speaking in general terms). All these kinds of lists do is help make it even easier for all sorts of hacks to think they can be a DJ.

I have no problems with Neal selling it. But I won't be buying it. I'm a D.J., I make playlists. I sometimes even share them with my peers. I'm not interested in selling mine, or buying someone else's. Thanks for the spam, Tom.

Well, the tool is there. If you are interested, go buy it. If not, don't buy it. I just thoght it would be useful.

Your information, review, and endorsement = useful. You posting a promotional email = spam.

But that's just my opinion.

And you are entitled to it Steve. I only posted the e-mail I got from Mark for informational purposes. I wanted to honestly show folks where it all came from, nothing more.

Ever since on the "other" chat board, Neal told me to get out of the business because I said "I have seen Bill Herman perform at an event and would not pay what he charges" I would not give Neal the time of day.

This is my opinion only and your mileage may vary but he is one of the most egotistical self centered DJs around. He always has a better way to do something or will always look for the bad in any posts.

Now I am sure this will get back to him but I couldn't care any less.

Unless you are a novice and have no experience as a DJ, you should be able to put a play list together on the fly with out a cheat sheet.

Rant over.

So...I downloaded the sample database that this hack posted online. (Yes, I said it.) Again, I ask: Is this a joke?

Issues include - and are not limited to - the following:

  • Duplicate entries
  • Tripled entries
  • Misspelled artist names
  • Incorrect song titles
  • Miscategorizations of songs and artists
  • Empty fields

It's bad enough to mislabel songs and misspell artist names, but to be inconsistent about it is just plain pathetic! Also, the list lacks severely in variety. I mean, how often am I going to fall back on songs like "Kiss" by Prince or "You Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC? How much Frank Sinatra should I really be playing?

And speaking of the music, he explains on his webpage that he does not include "Today's Top Hits." Too bad, because there are a lot of current songs that are very popular at weddings, especially when you're in a pinch.

Finally, where did he get these ideas for sets from? For example, there's one set that grouped country, gangsta rap, and pop in the same set (Set 25). Why would would I ever want to do that?

I wouldn't use this so-called "cheat sheet" if it were free! Granted, this is a sample, but typically, a sample should be representative of the full product. Why anybody would charge money for an incomplete database loaded with misspellings and inconsistencies just boggles my mind! I think this guy should stick with offering his workshops about marketing to brides and leave the technical work to somebody who knows what they're doing.

Well, I *did* buy it. But not with the thought it was a cheat sheet nor ever thinking to use his sets... but I bought it as a simple reminder of the basics... Just like I pay to subscribe to Mobile Beat and effectivly PAY for the Mobile Beat 200.

Is it an end all, be all - nope - but will it be a good resource to have at your disposal just for the comfort factor when you're sweating what song to play next... yeah, a little - and it was worth the $10 I spent.

I also own the green book, and have considered even buying the CD of Jay Maxwell's book play something we can dance to.
