Last night, my next door neighbor noticed a car pull in my driveway and 2 guys "scoping things out". This was between 7-8 pm. My neighbors were at my house watching our 1 year old as I got called to do a last min. event. My wife was on her way home.

My neighbor saw these guys and spoke to them and after a few seconds they left. I'll get more info soon on what transpired.

We have a security system in my equipment room and now I am considering putting the system all over gthe house and possibly with video cameras. Yes, I am protective.

Do you have security at your home? I think it's a good idea.

Do you have security at your home?

A bit... ;)

The biggest problem I've seen in many security setups, is the response issue. If the cops can't get there to check it out within a couple minutes, it becomes a complete waste of money - as your stuff will be gone, or you will be dead!

Cameras are great if there's somebody available to watch them, or you actually have them set to record 24x7. Alarm systems go off falsely so many times, that many folks have come to ignore them.

I've literally got 10's of thousands of dollars in security into my place, but I consider my dog to be my best security asset. ;)

BTW, never, under any circumstances, go outside to confront someone who's on your property -- do it from an upstairs window. Have a phone in one hand, and a weapon nearby if possible. Nefarious people want to catch you off your guard -- don't give them that opportunity...

Costco, BJs, etc, have some very affordable 4-6 camer setups that usually come with access to an online server to stream 24/7. I have an older camera setup that I stream to a private Justin.tv channel using Adobe Flash Media Encoder. I can check my house anytime/anywhere from the web.

The cameras are a good deterrent by themselves, but having a little sign that says they are monitored via the web is even better. The thieves can't break in and steal the evidence.

Alarm, electrified fence, a pack of German Shepherds and a S&W.

Indeed, like Rick, I've got a pile...part of my "non DJ" business. First off, Rick makes a great point in that having a dog is a huge deterrent; but if you're going to get one, spend the money on one that has actual "bark", not a "yip". Train it, or better yet, buy it from a quality trainer (one where you both have to get trained). But if that is out of the question, I'm willing to pet your local shelter has a nice mutt that would work out just fine too...work with it and take care of it and it will take care of you and the family.

Alarms are great but make sure your installer (or you) takes the time to evaluate your property and installs quality equipment that doesn't trigger needlessly. Whether you want to spend the money for a monitored system is up to you...I personally think it's a waste of money especially if you have decent neighbors around. What you want your system to do is to activate sirens and lights, activate your camera's, slam your doors and make your window shutters flap back and forth in order to get attention!!

Seriously, contrary to popular belief, the police are around to enforce laws, not be public servants.

Covert cameras are nice, but visible cameras can be an obvious deterrent. Pros and cons to everything....you have to decide what you think is best for your application.

I can (and probably others here too) offer more information if you need...PM for a phone number if you'd like to talk.

And like Rick pointed out, if the boys come skulking around at night, take the high ground and make sure your first call is to the PD and don't hang the phone up until the badges get there and tell you to. Have a "safe room" designated in your house where everyone goes; have a phone or more; stay low to the floor. Shoot, or don't shoot, is a judgement only you can make.

I start talking to them! They know I will go on an on an on........and not shut up. So they leave!

My House has full security, cameras, Sirens, and Heavy Locks. also when I am on the road I pack an apartment alarm as well.
My laptops are LoJacked, all my gears serials are registered with my local police.
yeah, I'm a little Anal.

Just wanted to elaborate on this a bit...

Your safe room should be dead bolted at the very least, and have a safe way to egress -- window with escape ladder, etc.

If somebody breaches your perimeter (outside doors, windows), you need to have a way to slow them down, so that you can be prepared if they really want to get you. I use digital deadbolts -- every door in my house (even interior doors), has one. No key access -- you have to know the codes.

Outward opening doors should have hinge pin locks installed, so somebody can't lift the hinges out, and pull the door open. I put solid metal safety studs into mine -- not all that hard to do. If somebody lifts the hinge pin, the door still can't be pulled off or open.

Again, this is to buy you time until the cops get there, or you actually remembered where you left those shotgun shells (hopefully close to the shotgun)... ;)

I dont have any faith in cameras
they dont do anything to PREVENT the crime
a video record of the person who MURDERED you isn't very useful

a deterrent is your best bet

Well Mike, that is the deterrent...

But it requires that you use them to your advantage.

For example -- mine are setup, so that I can see the cameras in every room that I'm usually in. That and my sensors, gives me a heads up on what's going on outside (and inside) my place.

If a sensor goes off in the driveway or woods for example, not only am I made aware of it, but so is the dog (she is usually quicker than the sensors though). If I'm sleeping, it will wake me up, or she will. Monitor is right in front of me, so I can take appropriate action, based upon the potential threat.

I sleep in a safe room BTW. I am multiple times removed from access from the outside of the house. Paranoid yes, but also necessary because of my location near the gang banger dens. I'm isolated at night and on the weekends -- so nobody is around to hear if I scream...

Setting up your home security, requires a good look around, plus a good look at your habits (as well as those of the bad guys in your area). I'm comfortable doing my own because of my background, but as Barry mentioned, for most people, it's best to get a pro in to evaluate, and provide a plan. Most DIY's miss half of the obvious, and most of the non-obvious things that need to be addressed.

It's sorta like hiring a DJ -- sometimes, you get what you pay for... ;) :)
