The park event is a no go and I'm good.

What I just found out from a guy that helped out with cooking the food last year is the city sponsers this event. So he's looking to put as much money in his pocket as he can. That's why he wants to get away with paying as little as can so he can line his pockets.

How much he gets is none of your business and not your problem. You were asked to provide audio support for 'x' amount of money. Can you do it or not?

Actually you are incorrect... but that's because of the picture that Mix paints about the "area" and gigs he happens to get. Remember, NJ is a very small state... if you look within his very small town... then yes he won't get much more... however, literally within 20-30 minutes, exist some of the most wealthiest people in the COUNTRY and some of the states most expensive venues. I live 30 minutes south of Mix and drive 45-60min to each event so I can work with some of the best clientele... however he seems to want to work with clients within only a few square miles. Even the wedding that his friend did over the weekend, which is actually 15 minutes south of him, gets dj's from time to time that charge between $1000 and $1500 for a wedding. If he just expanded slightly and did more to appeal to these clients these posts would never exist.

But if these types of post didn't exist, he wouldn't have anything to talk about.

Yup. I'm driving down to Georgetown area of D.C. this Saturday for a 7 hour ceremony/cocktails/reception. LONG, LONG day for me, but the money is alright! This past Saturday I was up in Towson, MD...Only about a 25 minute drive from me. If I only did gigs within a few square miles of me, I would probably only book 2 or 3 gigs a year!
That's the point... even I wouldn't survive in my county where the avg household income is over 100k... I literally book less than 10% of my gigs in my county (within say 20 minute drive). You have to be willing to expand to find enough gigs in your price range to support it.

Just like RedHot....
I did an outdoor gig twice a year at a local motorcycle hillclimb.
I filled the area pictured below (and then some)
and played over top of regular announcements (from their PA) and motorcycles revving in the pits...
with two 15" JBL passive speakers and a 300-watt amp.

No! Not for the amount he wants to pay. End of story period!

He did answer that already. ZERO!!!

Yeah I know I'm trying to make the point he will work for free but will argue over $50 bucks and turn down $250 because of it

There's no argument. I'm not doing it. Like I said it was my partners cousin who got married. So we're talking a family. The same as when my oldest niece got married. I'm returning the favor.

Again like I said that event is not worth doing for that price.

Besides my past experience all an event like this with such little pay will lead you to the next low paying gig. The other reason for not doing it is because we've never gotten another gig off of doing this one.

So we're talking a family.

I'm doing a family wedding in a couple weeks and am charging them $700, in a couple months I am doing another family member at $1000. Yes, they are getting a little discount but family should understand that this is your job and not expect it for free. That is 2 Saturdays in peak season. Doing it for free would not only cost me money, but would also mean that I lose 2 paying gigs. So I give it to them a little cheaper and also get them a gift as if I were attending as a normal guest.

Your family and friends will respect your business more if you are not always doing it for free for them. I have a close friend that owns a car dealership. I don't expect him to give me free cars.

And I'm not arguing with you I really don't care enough to argue about it. It's no sweat to me if you work for free every weekend. If I could find 4 like you I'd go back to multi-op

If you had any idea what you were doing you would go to the park throw 2 speakers up on tripods and eat free food for a few hours and come home with $250. You work in bars for next to nothing, you do more free events than you are paid for, yet you are too proud to work for $250 because other DJ's wont or told you that you shouldn't. The best part is you are going to show up with "A cooler full of Pepsi" and sit there anyway while someone else gets paid for it.

I got to say Mix doing $1000 gigs is pretty cool. I don't do too many of them but when I get one above 1K I'm pretty happy. Most this year are around $700. If I wasn't getting any gigs I'd be doing them for $250 real quick and building a reputation I wouldn't be working for free and turning doen real easy paying gigs but that's me

Let me say this. Take away the money for a moment. For me this goes beyond the money. He disrespected me in 2 ways. First he tried to manipulate me into doing this event. He thought he could pump me up to do this.

Let me say I don't step on my friends toes. The DJ that did it last year was DJ Kel. He's my friend as well as my partner. I don't treat my friends like crap. I don't need work that bad that I would move him out of the way to make some money. I don't roll like that and God won't bless me if I do.

2nd thing is he has seen me at work many times over. Events where he was a part of the event. So he knew the quality work he would get by getting me to do it. So when he told them he could get anybody to do it for $250 that to me was a slap in my face. I know I'm damn good and worth more than $300 to do this event. I was just trying to do a nice favor in honor of his son.

My friend Jay Jay the DJ who plays in the same place I do told me that if I told him I would do the event for him for $300, he would quickly pay me the $300. I don't know who he is going to get. All I know is it certainly will not be me! Those who feel I should still do it can save their energy and don't waste your time making a post. I am not that hard up for money.

So if he's your "partner" how much did you make from last years event?

Perhaps you are but he obviously doesn't feel this way. It's also a cookout in a park he CAN get anyone to do it for $250 and many for less. You don't need "mad skillz" to be a jukebox

I think it's obvious to all of us you aren't hard up for money because you never make any and when some is offered you find a way to get out of it

When I first started doing these radio-station-sponsored events....
they were infested with biker gangs from all over PA.
The first time I did the gig, I had to get security to ask people to move out of the way so I could leave.
(they were NOT gonna move because "I" asked them to)

So, NO!
The Pagans and Hell's Angel's heard that song enough that I didn't dare play it.

I had nothing to do with last year's event. I was there chilling. If I did it wouldn't have sounded like that. The big thing is he would have gotten more than what he paid. He did the right thing by giving him what he did. You pay a shitty price and you get do do. You pay more you get better quality. He did it the way he did on purpose.

Last year he paid $250 in theory $50 more shouldn't get him any better gear just a standard year to year price increase
