Colleagues : Using SmartRipper, vob files have been extracted/imported to the external hard drive and then placed in their folders.

Now, with a 500gb Firewire drive nearly full, rather than expand to another drive, perhaps it's time to convert these vob files to smaller mpeg2s (mpg).

I have #1DVDRipper as well, which does DVD-to-mpeg2 ripping, or, from a folder on the hard drive, however when I point to a folder filled with vobs I'd like coverted, the program asks me for an IFO file which was not saved using SmartRipper originally and there's where to roadblock is.

Very open to suggestions (other than doing it over again!)

Bounce : What file structure does codec this build to? .mpg.? .mp4? Is that file structure compatible with VDJ4 or SE3?

I've tried 3iVx, DiVx and Nero. Then .wmv. and .avi. Too many variables that change DVD to DVD. .mpeg2 and/or .vob format seems almost universally accepted in software and hardware configurations.

The issue at the moment is converting raw vob files into mpeg2s, batch file style.

Thanks for the VP7 information. It'll be Googled shortly to see what can be found about it.

Cap, the codec builds out to an .avi which works if I can remember near perfectly in VDJ. It was done a few builds back and I'm pretty sure they improved their video engine since then.

Cap, could you go into more detail on what exact issue you are having encoding the raw vob files into the mpeg2's? Because you have all the tools we have here at the office and am curious to exactly what your issue is. :)

Bounce : I'm sorry for being so specifically vague. Newbie in video, can you tell?

I purchased the entire "Greatest Of" Promo Only DVD Series in Atlantic City last August.

After several weeks of trial and error converting a DVD into all the aformentioned files format and styles (.avi, .wmv, .mp4 using 3iVx, DiVx, and Nero codecs) and being that storage media is a whole lot less expensive than the days of SCSI, I "ripped" the DVDs using SmartRipper into .vob files; full-blown full-sized .vob.

Now, on my external hard drive, there are 1,500 video files, all in monster vob format. I wish to convert all these vob files into .mpg (mpeg2 SVCD files), doing from one to possibly a batch of a hundred at a time.

I thought #1DVD Ripper would do this however it is asking me for an associated IFO file, which is not available.

If #1 DVD Ripper will not allow me to batch file convert a ton of already ripped vob files into .mpg (.mpeg2 SVCD) files, is there one that will? Ripping a DVD into vob files takes about 20-30 minutes. Ripping a DVD into .mpg files may take up to 6 hours or more. I'm hoping that I can batch file convert these existing vob without having to re-rip from the originals.

Your vagueness is excused :)

Now to your question, for $35 this program turned up to me in a quick google response, supposedly it does batch encoding, seems like it supports practically any format your wishing to convert to... I hate to give you this type of response as it means you'd have to buy another program. However, there is no other program that comes to my mind that supports batch encoding, in fact we never have dealt with it here. And we do TONS of video projects each year, including club video w/ the Promo Only series.

Here is the link... From the words of wolfster "Hope it helps". Let me know what you plan on doing. I may be able to assist you on the way.

Cap, I think the easiest method is to purchase another drive. I've got over 1,400 gigs on my machine filled with karaoke, video and mp3 across 4-5 drives. I forget.

You're always going to be adding to your collection, right? If so then why compress your files?

YourBasicDJ : What music media format do you play?

And that's what I'm attempting to do with ripping DVDs to .mpg BUT having done the intermediary step of having saved the vob files first.

As your ripping CDs (my DVDs) to OTS (my vob) your conversion of OTS (my vob) to .mp3 (my .mpg) is the same only finding that final conversion program has been a problem.

Actually there was hope someone could pop this off the top of the noggin, but alas, ashas been experienced front-to-back in this short term venture into VJ world, the digital video world is nowhere near as simplistic as the the digital audio (yet now recalling that mp3 conversion in 1999 wasn't easy nor universally understood either).

Got one. AVS Video Converter Tools Ver 5.4. Converts almost any video file type from one format to another.

In this case, 16 .vob to .mpg files. Right under my nose and forgot I already had it.

Thanks anyway, YourBasicDJ. Appreciate your chiming in.

just a quick one.

have you ever just renamed the file (name).vob to (name).mpg and seen what happens ??

thats what a vob is its a mpg file anyway

:)

A VOB is an mpeg, yes, but with some added info for the player....

What would be the purpose of simply changing it's extension? It gains him no drive space of which he is looking for....

Cap, if you're looking to compress your files to a smaller size, try TMPGEnc XPress. It'll allow you to adjust the size, and trim as necessary. There are already setting presets that will allow you to output at VCD quality if that's what you're looking to do.

Of course it looks to do what your AVS tool already does as well.

Aye, good old TMPG! We use that here at the office and love it, works in tandem with our VideoToaster & Speed Edit systems :)

It does batch encoding but it can be a real pain the you know where setting up. It has by far the best encoding of a mpeg I've seen on any encoder.

Playing with the trial version as we speak. So far, it seems to do the job of #1 DVD Ripper (or Smart Ripper) in getting native files into the system (their file extension [dvddata] on imported video files can be changed to mpg or vob and still work).

Now playing with the video editor which will be a huge plus in setting start and stop points without having to use Cue Settings in the player software.

How's the learning curve on the editor Travis? Maybe it's me or the trial version but I'm stumbling, big time.

I really like the HDV feature as my lap top and monitor are both HDMI compatible.

So Travis, you give lessons on this software? I'm thinking it's really good stuff.
Jeff, do you? Thank you very much for pointing me to this program. It looks very good so far.

If you want to import vob files for editing, you'll want to import, and then enter *.* to view all tracks. That will allow you to see the vob files, as it only natively supports the mpg extention, not vob if I recall.

Although this is for an older version (v3) it still pertains to much of version 4...
