Hey all,

We are finally cracking open our wallets and going to pay someone to do a complete top to bottom redesign of our site.

If you created the perfect DJ business website, what would you include/not include in it? I am looking for everything from color and font suggestions to content.

I don't really want this to turn into a "who's site is better" type thing, I am looking for legit suggestions. We are starting with a blank slate and want to tell the designer how to go.

It all depends on the type of gigs you're looking to get. IMO wedding sites should be subdued pastel colors while someone looking into school/college shows should use more bold colors.

Google search DJ sites. Find one that you like (or a combination of) and go from there

Look beyond DJ websites. I've certainly taken ideas and/or found inspiration from the websites of a wide variety of businesses. If you have a theme or mood in mind, do a google images search for that theme + web design. For instance, "retro web design" or "music web design". Also try searching "award winning web design".

I will tell you, some of my absolute favorite DJ websites are not at all what many DJs would say a "perfect" website should be.

This is not a knock at how you run your business Patrick, but since you do have a somewhat relaxed performance style, why do you want to over think your web page?

Your website should be a reflection of your business and/or yourself. Color scheme should be what you like and not what statistics say. Examples: Would a sports team use colors that weren't their own? Is Coca-Cola not going to use red? Etc. As long as your site is clean, concise and easy to navigate, you'll be fine.

There isn't really a need to do much "cracking of the wallet" either. Domains are cheap. Hosting is cheap (or free with your ISP) and there are plenty of free publishing tools out there.

Good luck.

I get what you are saying Hank. The reason we have decided to do this is that some of the client feedback forms we have received back are "excellent service, but site needs work".

I have tried for going on 6 months now to run it the best I can, but I do not have nearly the knowledge to get all the tags and coding right for proper SEO, nor do I have the time or knowledge to really get the site to look the way I want it to look.

I have never been happy with the site, and Eric and I both finally agreed that instead of doing the local winter bridal show, we are going to use that money to have the site overhauled to the level we have always wanted it to be.

Yes, but Patrick...

Your site is nothing but text and text links. This is like the dinosaur of a web page.
No wonder you are getting comments against it. It honestly won't take much to breath some life into it. It's your decision and your money, but I stand by the DIY method.

.

Trust me Hank, I have tried. I once spent over 20 hours in one weekend we did not have a gig just working on homepage, and never could get it to look the way I wanted it to.

This girl we are going to have do it is giving us a 2 for 1 rate, because she is also going to take over and overhaul the wrestling store site as well.

I wish you luck, but I'd bet one of you knows or is related to somebody that could do it. I have seen many folks pay stupid money for simple things. Just get a fair price.

:triwink:

One other thing Pat............

Make sure you get details in writing signed contract or agreement as to what will be offered and some sort of time frame. Per experience, these things are very very important.

well I have no problem telling you guys what I am paying for it and you can let me know if it is good deal or not.

Completely setting up 2 sites from scratch with proper SEO for $450. Once we approve the sites and they are all tweaked, it will be $20 an hour for her to make changes to it.

Okay Im not in your area but for 2 the price is good possibly if its a turnkey but its not really that great for a two for one offer. Of course Safeway jacks the total for 2 for one Rib roasts when offering their sales versus the regular single price.

Her normal cost is $375 per site.

Here are a couple of the sites she has done:

http://www.mels-smells.com

I went to high school with the girl and have known her for over 20 years.

not to dis your friend but the sites shared look a bit dated and old school. You want the newest freshest current approach especially at that price. If those are her newest efforts, I would be worried the SEO might be ancient as well.

I have to be honest with you all, I am just so tired of dealing with it at this point I just want it done and over with. I have spent way to much time and energy the past few months on it that I should have been using on other things

Patrick if you need ANY ebooks on the subject, here are a few titles you can think about:

(average) WebsiteCreation101.pdf

0470385413 (Building WebSites All-in-One For Dummies Jan 2009).pdf

11 Steps To Create A Successful Website.pdf

Building A WebSite for Dummies.pdf

look its up to you on whats out there
I train people here locally all the time
I get these for free from the boss
plus it saves him money in the long run

I still have loads more just ask

I'm just about done having my website re-designed. My designer sent me a questionnaire, like our wedding planners. It was very comprehensive and helped give her an idea of what I liked, didn't like, who my big competitors are, etc. Maybe your designer has something like that they can send over?

You can get a 30 day free trial at hubspot.com. They will grade your page and show you what keywords to use, what your competitors keywords are, etc.

A big thanks to Steve Cie for pointing me in that direction
