I have been reworking my small system the last couple of weeks. I started off by rebuilding my rack-mounted 1U DJ computer. I upgraded from dual core i3, to a quad core i5, and from a single 2TB hard drive, to a 250GB SSD system drive, with the old 2TB drive reused as a dedicated data drive. I also added 4GB of RAM, giving me 8 gigs.

With that completed, I moved on to the audio components, which are mounted in a Gator Cases GDJ-8X2.

Originally, my components included an American Audio DP2 and an inexpensive 4 channel mixer for added microphones. Below, in the 2U space was my 1U rack-mounted PC and a 1U keyboard drawer. Mounted on the back side of the rack is a power unit with outlets on both sides, providing outlets for the internal components, and external outlets for speakers. Everything fit, (barely) but the mixer was slightly too big, so it overlapped the Controller by 1/2 inch, which affected my OCD sensibilities.

I really like the DP2, but don't like the PCDJ software it came with, nor do I like the lack of a microphone input. I couldn't get Traktor to work on it, so I'm trying VDJ 8. After searching for a rack-mounted controller and not finding any I like as well, I decided to replace the mixer. 19" rack-mounted mixers are not easy to come by either. Finally, I found a Denon DN 410X that I thought would do the job. Requiring only 3U of rack space, it won't overlap with my controller in the 8U space in the top of the rack.

Here's where I miscalculated... the Denon mixer is 6 1/2" deep, and the inputs/outputs are on the BOTTOM (instead of on the back side like the old mixer). It won't fit! CRAP! How could I have forgotten to check the depth measurements and not realized the inputs were on the bottom? I'm usually much better at planning than this. I wanna kick myself!

On the positive side, I kinda like the Denon mixer. It's a huge upgrade from the old mixer, but I've tried every possibility, and it's not gonna fit in the rack. Let this be a lesson, as it was for me... check ALL your measurements, and double and triple check the layout of new gear, especially when you want to mount it in a rack.

One more thing... I can't for the life of me figure out why manufacturers build rack-mountable components, and then put switches and knobs on the back!!! The power switch on the Denon mixer is on the bottom, so it would be buried in the rack and inaccessible. If you mount it in a rack, how are you expected to access the power switch on the back? The squelch knob of my rack-mounted wireless mic system is on the back... WHY???

So now what? I have only two options that I can see... buy a new rack, or buy a new mixer. The rack would seem like the easiest option, but not necessarily the least expensive. I modified my existing rack, adding rack rails in the back, which was originally open, and reinforcing the top to support a VESA mount for my 22" monitor. Buying a different mixer would be the easiest, but the available options are pretty limited, and I want the mixer to be an upgrade from my previous mixer. That's hard to find. Any suggestions? What would you do (keeping in mind I want to keep the rack-mounted DP2 and computer)?

Denon MC6000 would combine the controller and mixer and is rackable ... only issue is you'd need to do surgery on the front of the case as it also has front mounted controls.

Good option... I have considered it, actually. But a new MC6000 is around $700. Not necessarily prohibitive, but something to think about.[emoji4] It WOULD allow me to run Traktor, so that's a plus. And it would also simplify the wiring. I think it's definitely a contender. Anybody have one they're trying to sell?[emoji4]

I paid $599 including a case and an upgrade to full Serato 1.5 years ago. It's $592 at kpodj.com (signup to get discount price)

You got a very good deal, IMO.[emoji4] The Serato upgrade is not included in the $592 price, nor is a case. I would not need Serato or a case, but there's certainly a lot of value in the extras you got for $599.

Expo season is coming up .. there may be some discounts at DJ Expo in August (I bought mine there). Most sellers honor the prices when people call in if you can wait until then .. :)

I can wait... just means I have no small system right now, but I have nothing booked that I would use it for currently.[emoji4] I'm hoping once I have my new upgraded small system, that I'll use it more often... in venues where I'd likely use my large system today.

Once I get my small system upgraded, I'll start working toward downsizing my large system.[emoji4]

Rolled the dice.[emoji1]... Saw a Denon MC6000 MK2 on eBay with bids ending this evening, described as; "like new comes with AC adapter, USB cable, Serato dj, original box"... Pics looked good, so I bid on it and won it![emoji4] ... Bought the rack rails from B&H Photo, so I should have it all by this coming Friday. I really could have waited, but I guess this was meant to be.![emoji1]

Mix and Bobcat are neck and neck .. they're rounding the final turn .. it's .. it's .. BOBCAT by a nose.

I don't see why you're using a DJ controller/mixer for a ceremony rig. I'd put a little Behry or Yamaha small mixer into that case and call it a day.
I don't think Bobcat does weddings .. I think it's just his small system.

Weddings are not something I typically do, and I don't pursue that type of gig, but I would do a wedding if a client wanted me to. I have done a couple of them. I have my large system, which is my preferred system, but if the venue is very small or inaccessible (upper floor and no elevator for instance), I have a small system I can carry up the stairs. I also take my small system to every event as a backup. You're right, though. If I was doing a ceremony, or even providing cocktail music in a second location, I'd just use my laptop and a small mixer. My new Allen & Heath ZED60-10FX would work great for that.[emoji4]

Me??? In competition with Mix???[emoji1] Not hardly.[emoji1] I have been on a bit of a shopping spree lately.[emoji4]

The Denon DN410X was sort of a mistake[emoji1]... at first, but I've decided to use it in my large rack to replace the 1U rotary line mixer mounted in it now. The Denon would certainly be an upgrade. I'll have plenty of room for it if I remove the light controller and use my video computer and MyDMX as I planned, or I could remove a drawer. My Eliminator ET-8 only turns the lights off and on, but I'm still a little paranoid about having everything computer controlled. I know... that sounds kinda weird coming from a computer geek.[emoji1]

Oh, sorry. When I saw "small system" the first thing I think of is ceremony unit.

Looks like that's the next task. Maybe remove the area as shown (in blue) below...

It's just molded plastic, so the Dremel oughta do it. I can buy some black plastic edge trim to finish off the edges.:djsmug: Not sure if cutting a big hole in that part of the case will weaken the structure of the case, but it looks like it should be OK.

If you have gear on top and in front that are screwed in, not sure the front piece of plastic is essential. I would leave as much as I could though.

I think that in the "buy things immediately without waiting to see if I can get a better deal" category, you are getting near to matching me ...

No... You are in a league all by yourself. ... And while I could have waited to see if I could get a better deal on the MC6000, I could not have waited on THE one I bought because the time was ticking down. Other than new ones selling for $600-$700, there were only two used ones for sale. One was a buy-it-now only, at $503, but looked a little iffy. The other is in the UK with no reserve and ends in 5 days. It comes with a pretty nice hard case, so it's a little difficult to estimate what it will sell for eventually, because the case probably cost in the neighborhood of $300 when new. Bids are at $302 already. I'd guess it's gonna go for over $500. It will be interesting to see. By the time that auction ends, I'll already have mine, and I only paid $445. I was bidding against at least one other person at the last minute, and would have lost out with my final bid, but decided to add an extra $20... What's $20; right?... The other guy's final bid was $440. I would have been ticked if I had lost it over $5. I bet that guy I was bidding against is ticked for losing it over $5.

Enjoy your new toy , I really like my MKI MC6000

Thanks... I'm hoping it works out well. It may just end up being my best controller, but I'm gonna miss my little DP2... it was a great choice for a beginner DJ like me.[emoji4] The MC6000 has WAY more features than I need... maybe I can figure out how to use some of them.[emoji1] The best thing though... Steve149 has one. Must mean I'll be a REAL DJ when I get mine.[emoji1]
