I have a new computer with windows 8 on it and hate it. Can you buy a copy of windows 7 and install it on a computer that has a newer version on it. Never tried it before.
How come you did not order it with Win 7?

Yes .. You may want to check, though, as some can be downgraded at no cost: http://lifehacker.com/5974318/downgrade-your-new-windows-8-computer-to-windows-7-for-free

Most vendors do not give an option to put on V7 .. Even if you custom order it.

If they really want your money they will. Seems like a waste of money to buy a Machine then to spend money to put in stuff to replace what is there.

A lot of the time it's based on the contractual agreement with Microsoft. MS wants to push V8, and generally allows only business customers the option of an earlier version. Sometime the PC/laptop vendors are screwed as well.

Well, maybe people should have Business accounts instead of buying like regular consumers, off the shelf. I have a hefty Business Credit Account with Dell. They give me what I want.

Good Luck with the muscle on an account that doesn't spend 100's of thousands a year.

I have fared well so far! Last two times I custom ordered from Dell I got exactly what I wanted. I warned them that if the machine came with anything I did not order that I would send it back. I was not bluffing!

The transition from Windows Vista to Windows 7 wasn't as pertinent to Microsoft's future as Windows 8 is. They are really throwing all of their eggs in that basket so getting something else is far more difficult.

We have this conversation every time Microsoft does an major upgrade to their OS. Other than windows ME I have embraced all new updates to Windows. I run and enjoy Windows 8 on all my computers including my gigging laptop and I have yet to have a compatibility problem and my dj software actually runs better.

Problem with Win 8 I found -- is they changed access to the hard drive, and the APIs that control that. That renders many thousands of lines of code I wrote flaky. So, it would take me a couple years to upgrade all that code -- or I could tell you to go to NewEgg, buy a copy of Win 7, format the drive, and install it. It's only like a $100 bucks (less if you can catch a sale).

Until they fix it -- I would suggest staying away from Win 8.

I suspect Microsoft will re-enable the standard START menu at the 1st patch release.

Not just the start menu -- the API changed for HDD access. A lot of software will not work properly now, and they are not documenting their changes.

That .. I would not expect them to change, unless there is sufficient user backlash.

Based upon my customers I talk with, it's very significant. Many are very frustrated at the new interface, and without a bunch of registry tweaks, you can't get rid of Metro.

All things considered, that's what they may have been planning all along... User buys a computer with Win 8 on it, hates it, and buys a copy of 7 -- they get paid twice.

I hope they make Metro a switchable setting at the next patch update, instead of relying on 3rd party add-ons or heavy registry tweaks. I played with it, and it seems a fair interface for touch devices .. just not so good with a mouse. Certainly for business, if I had PCs to roll out to users, I would stick with Win7 until a training regimen could be put into place.

As to underlying API issues, that is tougher, as they may have changed subsystems. If your software used low level calls for speed improvements, they may no be so easily handled with a new service or application layer.

Problem I see as a developer, is that Win 8 is based around HTML 5 and JavaScript. They now block direct access to the HDD, through an abstraction layer. I think they are also using the same extension I use for my playlists for something internal.

Rockit runs on it ok, but sometimes the playlists don't display on certain configurations of Win 8. The quick and dirty trick, is to empty the History list, then the playlists show up again.

I have no intention of putting 8 on any of my computers -- it's meant for tablets, and the only tablets I care about, were the ones Moses was carrying.
