Got my little 2Tb FireCuda drive in .. also the larger 3.5" 2Tb version I bought for my tower (OS drive) .. to go with the 2 4Tb Barracuda discs for data. Would have just bought a new tower, but I bought this last year and not a whole lot of difference between the i7 6th gen and the new 7th gen.

Your's came in already? Did you spring for the faster shipping? I wish I had. Don't like sittin' around waiting for new stuff to come, but too cheap to pay for faster shipping.[emoji1] That's OK. I got a lot of stuff to do before it comes. Right now I'm downloading all the Windows 7 drivers and applications from Dell's support site. It looks like the seller of this computer didn't do that... just took whatever Windows 10 assigned. That's fine, since I'm not keeping it on Windows 10 anyway, but I think I'll get all the Windows 10 stuff too and keep this little 128GB drive stored away so I can upgrade with it in the future.

The smartest thing Dell did was putting a unique Service Tag Number on every computer. Very easy to get the history and all the original software and drivers (and all the upgrades) simply by entering a 6 digit number. Our state standard for computers was Dell, and though they don't necessarily make the best computers, they're probably the easiest to support.[emoji4]

Normal delivery .. maybe I'm closer to a shipping depot.

*edit* I take it back .. they came from CA.

Wow... Dell even has the recovery ISO's for Windows 7 Pro, and for Windows 10 Pro. I might just give that a shot. Takes a while to download, but I'm just gonna start it and let it go. The instructions are part of the download. Hope it tells me where to get the Windows activation code for Windows 7, 'cause all I got was one for Windows 10. I guess we'll see.[emoji4]

Well CRAP!!![emoji1] Apparently nobody's working in Hutchins, Texas.[emoji1] Mine has been there since Saturday. You're lucky yours didn't take that route. I'm tempted just to drive down there and get it.[emoji1]It's only about 3 hours away. Someone could have biked it to Oklahoma City in 3 days![emoji1]

My Lenovo came with W8 restore disks and W7 preinstalled. I had to make my own restore disks for W7. My luck the DVDs didn't burn properly and I never got W7 to activate with an ISO from MS. Now she runs W10 & Ubuntu. W10 is okay with me overall. My enter keys just decided to stop working so it's time for a replacement keyboard. It's 3.5 years old - Past it's replacement time anyhow.

Not looking too good for the delivery of my disk drive today. Just departed Hutchins, Texas at 4:00am today. Not sure why it was held hostage in Hutchins, but now that it has escaped, maybe I'll get it this week?[emoji1] This delivery is more like UPS than FedEx.[emoji4]

I coulda just gone to Best Buy and bought one for $150. A little over $50 more, but I've easily wasted more money than that before.[emoji1]

OK... Prospects are looking brighter. The disk drive arrived in Oklahoma City at 9:27am. I'm pretty sure it's traveling by moped[emoji1], since it took 5 1/2 hours to make a 3 hour trip, but at least it's headed in the right direction![emoji4]

YAY!!! Tracking says it's Out For Delivery![emoji1] This is the incredible part; it only took 4 minutes from the time they entered that it arrived in Oklahoma City, to the time it was on the truck for delivery.[emoji1] They need to move some of those OKC folks to Hutchins, Texas.[emoji1]

Since it had to cross the southwest .. it's probably more apt to be "As The Drive Burns" .. :)

While I was waiting for the delivery of the new SSHD drive, I cloned the SSD drive that came with the AIO computer onto a spare 1TB SATA drive. I put the cloned 1TB SATA drive in the AIO computer to test it, and good googly moogly... was it ever SLOW! Compared to the SSD drive, it had to take at least 10 times longer to boot up. Not necessarily a big deal, since you hope you don't have to reboot your computer very often in a day, but I hope the SSHD drive is a little quicker.[emoji4]
I was thinking about reusing the 128GB SSD drive as a system drive in a computer that can hold two drives. Now I'm not so sure if it might be better to just store it so it can go back in the AIO computer in the future. I'll have to think about that one.[emoji4]

My case mods aren't going so well. I taped off the area I want to cut out, but the darn tape doesn't stick. I tried several different kinds of tape, and the only one that sticks is the black electrical tape. I need to get a different color though, because the case is black and black tape just doesn't do the job.[emoji1]

Use colored GAF tape (white or beige) .. it sticks to everything.

GOT IT!!! Already have it (the new SSHD drive) in the computer and Windows 7 is loading. Now for the never ending barrage of Windows updates.[emoji1] I have Service Pack 1 on a DVD, but after that's installed, there's a gazillion updates that will take the rest of the day to install. It's good to finally be at this stage of my small system upgrade, though.[emoji4]

Well... that was harder than it should have been, but easier than it usually is.[emoji1] I know... sounds like craziness, but it will make sense when I tell the tale.

I installed Windows 7 Pro from a DVD, and it was pretty uneventful until it did the last restart before it sets up the desktop to get it ready for use. I got an error message that said something to the effect that Windows could not run on my hardware. Apparently it needed some drivers installed before it would work, but the driver files on Dell's Web site are .EXE's, so you can't load them until the OS is running. Tried reinstalling... nothin'. So I decided to try the recovery .ISO I downloaded, but it was too big for a DVD. Turns out, you have to load it on an 8GB USB thumb drive using a special Dell utility. So that's what I did, and Windows 7 installed just fine.[emoji4]

That was the harder than normal part, but the easier than normal part was that the recovery drive installed Service Pack 1, and Windows 7 was already activated![emoji4] So instead of taking 12 hours to run updates, most of them were already done. Had to install less the dozen or so Dell drivers, a few applications, and less than 100 updates, but now the computer is ready for DJ software. Everything works! Windows Experience Rating is 5.9, and the limiting factor is... the new SSHD drive. Yep; all the other factors were above 7.0, but the data transfer rate is 5.9. Not bad really, on a scale of 1 to 7.9. The best part is; it's all done. YAY!!![emoji1]

Here's an undocumented bonus feature of W10. It used to be - if Windows would not boot, you could press F8 or Shift+F8 and get into 'safe mode' to diagnose and hopefully resolve the issues.

Under W10, you can ONLY access safe mode - once you successfully boot and get into Windows. Makes perfect sense, doesn't it? :dontknow:

I've had the same trouble with W7 on DVD. On my desktop it was ethernet driver issues but they weren't a show stopper. I had some trouble when I put in an SSD -- all of a sudden it wanted special SATA drivers with the same controller!

My laptop is a funny duck. If you try installing it via a thumb drive plugged into the right side it will boot from the drive but then cannot find source disc or something like that. W7 would only install via the USB plugs on the left side. Turns out left side is USB 2.0, Right is USB 3.0 ("Super Speed") and needs drivers via Windows Update to work.

I had not realized that. Good to know. You have to wonder what brainiac made that decision.

OK .. got all my toys today to redo my tower this weekend .. 2 4Tb Barracuda drives and a 2Tb Firecuda Hybrid drive (for the OS and swap). Plus I bought a 2.5" 2Tb Firecuda drive for one of my laptops ..

That's one HELLUVA tower![emoji1] That's more drive space than I have in any of my servers. Are you planning to RAID the 4TB drives? How much of that space do you think you're data will consume? How will you back it up?
